• MAKE LUCKNOW A
"SLOW DOWN" TOWN •
•
'Highway 86, the direct route
• through Lucknow's business sec-
tion, has developed, into a speed-
way for through traffic *going to
the summer resorts and for heavy
• vehicle traffic en route to the
.Douglas Point complex. '
Little has been done or is being
done to control these continual
speed limit violations which •
Main street peopie in Lucknow
see happeningall day long,
every day..
The police protection•received
in Lucknow comes from the .Kin-
cardine Detachment of the Ont-
ario Provincial Police. Being
25 miles from Kincardine means
that the police protection here
• Is not adequate, but it seems to
*be what we have to live with. .
It seems to us that an officer
from the Kincardine detachment
could be located in Lucknow
for a day a week, not the same
day of course, but one day
out of seven.
Present police protection in the
• village seems to be limited to •
the usual drive through town on
the regular patrol, which really
doesn't count for too much.
A few hours in town on a Fri-
day or Sunday evening would
bring in enough fine dollars from
week end traffic speeding viola
tions to pay the policeman's
wages for a month.
And if they want to catch
those speeding truckers who daily
make the main street a• raceway,
they're not going to do it in
half an hour. They must be.pre-
pared to spend a day, periodical• -
ly on Lucknow's main thorough -
.fare. ,
Lucknow would soon get the
reputation of a "slow down" town,
but not unless a concentrated
effort is put forth.
Forget about the guy who is
5 miles an hour over the speed
limit. The iriolator we.are speak-
ing of will cruise the town at 50
to 60 miles an hour and it's done.
regularly every day.
Lucknow is part of Ontario and
as such deserves the services .of
a provincial police officer. Let't
control this speeding in town be-
fore a polite officer is called
to perform another type of duty,
to investigate,a dead child or
adult who happened to be in the
way of a speeding vehicle.

MUSICALLY RICH
The Lucknow Concert Band,
under director Gordon Cayley,
presented its annual spring
band concert on Saturday even-
• ing to a full auditorium at Luck -
now Central Public School.
The 65 member group, made
up.of young people from .the area ,
presented a fine and varied pro-
gram which indicates the many
hours of training and practicing
that goes into such an evening.
For many years Lucknow has
been favoured with a local.band
and dedicated leaders, the latd
P. W. Hoag, Elwin ball and the
present bandmaster Gordon Cay -
ley. .
This community has been mus
ically richer because of men
like these. •

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Commends Work
Of Concert Band
May 28, 1973
The Editor
The Lucknow Sentinel,
Lucknow , Ont.
Dear Sir: • • •
• I had the privilege'of attend-
ing the 'concert of the Lucknow..
Concert Band last Saturday night
and I want to commend them for
their presentation. They.have
come a long way in the past four
years, and their music shows the
result of many hours of devotion
and practice.
Much of the credit for the
excellence of this band must to
to their leader, Mr. Gordon
Cayley. We are indeed fort-
unate to have a person of his
interest and. ability in our school
and our community who is willing
to devote the time and energy he
does into helping our, young •
people to develop their musical
talents. Others in the community
have also given of their time and
energy to make this band a succ-
• ess and they; too, can be proud
of their accomplishment.
I write this because I think all
your readers should know about
this positive contribution that is
being made to this community.
Yours Sincerely,• . •
