Saddle .Club
The regular meeting of the
Riders Roost Saddle Club was'
held Tuesday ,.,15th May, at Ken.
and Carolyn Taylor's P.M.A.
Stables, with 37 present.
Carolyn discussed possibility
of leasing an area of land, suit-
able for club to hold riding
meets etc. , and asked support of
members, in. donating time'to
fix up area for this purpose.
On 26th August a trail ride of
200 miles is, being'held between
Toronto, Guelph, Cobourg, open
to all clubs or individual mem-
bers. Joan Leeson has more in-
formation.
Only two members turned in
drawings in contest for a club
crest. The dealine was extend-
ed two more weeks. A few incid-
ents occurred on our last trail
ride, and as safety is essential,
members discussed how further
incidents could be avoided; -
rideis should not gallop or race
their horses on a trail ride, and '.
at any pace, horses should be
kept a full length behind the
'horse ahead. Any horse that, is
likely to kick should. have a red
ribbon tiedon its tail, - as a
warning to other riders to keep
their distance. .A beach ride has
been,planned for May 27th,
,members:to meet at Nina and
Bernie Silverstones at 11 a. ni.
(Any member requiring assist-
ance in trailering. their horse,
please contact Nina). Ride will
be approxirnately.3 hours and
on returning to Ninas , members
will have BBQ lunch.
Carolyn reminded
members, Fairs and Horse Shows
will soon be, starting, and 'mem-
bers should be preparing their.
horses to look their best, if they.
plan to compete. Points' made
were, lots of grooming essential. -
proper feeding softening brittle
hooves with neets foorbil and
tar. Chipping a horse was suggest*
ed by'Kathy Taylor, but warning
by Jain Leeson was given not to
clip, horse all over, at this time
of year; course bristle hair could
result. Nina suggested 'mainten-
ance of mane and tail. ,
Barrel racing and games were
also discussed, with Joey Janssen
dernonsuating' path , to follow
around barrels. Kenny Ritchie
also showed directions of course.
Distance apart between side
barrels 60 ft, and from top•to bot-
tom .of course '120 feet, and a dist-
ance of'30 ft. between starting
gate and first barrel.
Anyone seriously interest in
'entering their horse or pony in'
such contests, should work up
their horse gradually to these,
things, and after exercise; feed
ing oats and as much hay as a
horse can eat in an hour.
Joan Leeson considered it still
too early in season to turn out hor-
ses for all night.' Usually this
would Lae done May 24th, until
October 15th. Also do not let
your horse eat frozen grass, as
they are liable to develop colic.
If your horse has colic, do not
let him roll, as he could easily
twist a bowel. . Keep horse' walk-
ing - give drink of hot water and
yeast.
Good news this meeting, was
from Gregg Gunby, who has a
new horse; a 4 yr. old, bay geld-
ing, not yet named. The Taylor
family attended a horse show in
London on the week end and
Sadie and Isobel. MacMillan
were outriding,' and had Isobel
Shepherd on foot, to open gates.
Linda Messenger has ,a new horse
colt. Next meeting on 29th May
at Phil and Sadie MacMfllan's
farm .
Door prize won by Nina Silver-
stone. Refreshments were served.
