The death of Ross MacRae. of Culross Township removes a man from the community who was always keenly interested in educationand the youth of the area. We first met Mr. MacRae when he was a ' member of the former Wingham District High School. Board and had always found him' keenly devoted to his position and his community schools. When county boards were formed, Mr. MacRae was elect- ed to serve the municipalities of Culross, Teeswater, Kinloss and Lucknow, a position he filled until his death. During this time he saw a new addition completed at Lucknow, plus major boundary changes in Kinloss and Culross Township, both of which he was deeply involved in: His diplomacy and Willingness to listen, earned him the admiration of those hedealt with in these matters. VERY UNDFMOtRATIC! A new representative will be needed to serve this area on the Bruce County School Board. If previous practices are followed, it could be that an ap- pointment might' be made to this post. The late Ross MacRae had over 11 years of his two year term to serve at the time of his .death. The trend to appointments to fill elected opo' positions is .. in- creasing and is done regularly at the school board and municipal council level. ; We can not accept this as being democracy in action. It takes government completely out of the hands of the people. They aretold who will represent them,., not asked. We have *never doubted the wisdom of those who would •appoint an official to office. They give this serious thought and are usually in a good position to choose a representative. • But what has `concerned us is the possible candidates .who might' be aspiring to office and are shut -out before they start because of a decision toappointa certain individual. Everyone knows that after an appointed member has .a period of time in office, he also bas a bit of an edge at the polls in the next election if he has done his job well. Appointments to elected offices are very undemocratic. .M 110•11..:---i-....114,MOOMEMP MAYrAIR. n ANT. wwwwwwwwww_wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, WILL.
