Fire badly gutted the interior
of the Bethel United Church' loc-
ated on Highway 21 between Pine.
River and Kincardine. The orig-
inal log church was built in
1856. In 1872 arrangements were
made to build a new church and
while the new one was being
built, the old log church was
burned down.

Fire destroyed the barn on the
firm of Mr. and Mrs. Glen
Hodgins of the 2nd concession oh
Sunday morning. Both the Rip-
ley and Lucknow fire trucks
were at the scene.

"Meatless Tuesdays" started in
all public eating places in Canada
No meat-was allowed served in
restaurants, hotels or institutions.
The meatless Tuesdays was a pre-
lude to the rationing of meat,
which was to begin later in May.
Frank Hamilton of Ashfield had
the misfortune to lose his garage,
colony house and 250 six-weeks-
old chickens by fire. By the co-
operation of neighbours who form-
ed a bucket brigade, they were
able to save the house.

public radio concert. Up to that
time ear phones had been used
for radio reception.
A. E. Buswell entered into a
partnership in Cameron, Murdodh

T. F. Cain removed the old
bar and a sitting' room partition
in the Cain House in order to
provide sufficient space for a
