Fire protection was the main .
issue at the inaugUral meeting'
of the Ripley counei.
Council agreed that the:exist-
ing fire hall would •have to be
replaced and that new fire equip-
inent would. be needed if the vil-
lage fire department-was to con-
tinue to serve the neighboring
townships.
Members of council feel that a
decision must be made on fire
protection in the very near Suture
and as a result called a meeting
of the reeves of Ashfield, Huron,
Kincardine and Kinloss Townships
for Thursday evening of last week,
The Reeves of all,municipal-
ities, as well as other council
members, were 'present to hear
the proposal of Ripley CounCil.
The feeling of the Ripley coun-
cil is that their present truck
and fire equipment, With,a few
additions, is suffficient to serve
the village itself,. but that if
fire service is tobe continued to
the rural municipalitiei, a, new
anal( and fire hall will be neces-
sary. Consideration might also
have to be given by the rural
municipalities 'to
a tanker truck.
A recent survey by a fire Ser-
vices 'officer from the Ontario
Fire Marshall's Office recommend-
ed that if Ripley is, to continue
service to the surrounding rural
municipalities, a new truck and ,
hall be put on the agenda. Estim-
ated cost' was about $65,000,
$45,000 for the truck ,,mnper and
tank and about $20,000 for' the
Ashfield Township. Council'met
on January 8th ata4.30 p.m. ,
Reeve Girvin. Reed, Deputy-Reeve
Warren Zinn, COuncillors Finlay
MacDonald', John Austin and Allan
Gibson were present and subscrib-
ed to the, Declaration of Office.
Minutes of the final meeting
for 1972 were read and approved.
Warren Zinn and Allan Gibson
were appointed to represent Ash-
field on the LucknOw 'Arena
Board.
Finlay. MacDonald: and John
Austin were appointed to the
Ashfield Recteation Committee.
Council decided to hold two
meetings each month in 1973 and
set the salaries as follows: -
Reeve $750; Deputy-Reeve
$675; Councillors $600; Clerk
Treasurer $4,500. Balaiies for
building.
.As the village cannot afford the,
equipment• by itself, it will' ask
the neighboring townships to con-
tribute to the fire department on
an assessment basis. 4`
The townships presently pay
$100 per hour for fire calls.
As already mentioned , the
village will replace the
existing fire hall. The village
hopes-to use $1,200 'of a. $2,000
Employment .Incentive Grant' this
winter to remove' the existing fire
hail.
Council intends to use the rest
of the grant money Or work on
