Beef producers, in Ontario, bOth
large and small, are alarmed and
dismayed at the recent request by
Mr. Walter Miller, Tara , Vice-
President of the National Fahiers
Union for a ban on the use of
diethylstilbestrol (DES). •
Said HarVey Davis, President
of the Bruce County Beef Improve-
ment Association, Warden of '1
Bruce County and neighbour of Mr,
Miller: "A tremendous disservice
has been rendered to the many
Either feeders in Ontario and
Canada', as well as to consumers
at large, by Mr. Miller. Fanners
are very conscientious about the
use of any product which would
present a, hazard to pUblic health
and if in fact , a hazard existed,
would themselves endorse a with-
drawal of the product. Through
our provincial Ontario Beef.lm-
provement Association: and
national Canadian Cattlemen's
_Ass_miation.,_wp_know that no
evidence has been documented
which would indicate that feeding
DES to fattening cattle at the rate
of 10 mg. per head per day is a
hazard to public health. To ban
the use of DES is also unfair to
consu-rners-w-ho-wOuld Ace-the —7--
certainty of increased beef prices:
with the loss to use of this valu-
able production aid."
Mr. Davis concluded by chal-
lenging Mr. Miller and the Na-
tional Farmers Union to make an
_objective..and_rationalassessment
of the use Of DES before arousing
further public hysteria.
