WEED CONTROL IN TURNIPS
In the past few years, there
have been some dramatic im-
provements in weed control meth-
ods in turnips. Three products
are recommended - Chlorthal
("Menial), Trifluralin (Trflan)
and Nitrofen (Tok).
Treflan and TOIE are the most
commonly used materials in this
area. Both products kill annual
grasses - and most broadleaf
weeds. They will not kill twitch
grass, ragweed or some of the
mustards,-
Treflan, the cheaper of the two,
must be thoroughly worked into
-the- soil- anytime- before _planting.
A spray boom on a double disc
does this job well. Treflan kills
weeds as they germinate. -
Tok is sprayed after the turnips
are up and' in the two to four
leaf stage. The timing of the
spray application is more import-
ant with this product. It is also
hand, the larvae seldom chew
- through-the lower surface.
Last year a study was initiated
in Bruce 'to determine the beetle
population.. From this study, it
was found that there were 1,400
ei±ache middle of June. This
igan where populations of one
million per acre have been re-
ported.
' This year there will be another
survey made to see if the popu-
lation is increasing. If the beetle
is going to be a problem, then it
won't be for another few years.
At present, tests are underway
Harro o see if th beetle can
be controlled by its natural en-
emies.
If you are suspicious of . Cereal
Leaf Beetle damage, then please
contact me in Walkerton.
