BRUCE COUNTY MARKET
HOG INDEX
Last year 67.6% of the market
hogs in Bruce had a grade index
;of 100 or better according to the
Ontario Pork Producers Market-
ing Board. records. This" puts
Bruce County in the upper-claqs
of Ontario as' far as hog quality
is concerned. . The Ontario aver-
age was 64.5%. •
As everybody knows, an. aver-
'age Is made up of gith the 'good"-
and the not so good.. Hog produc-
ers had 'a real opportunity to ex-
amine their records in 1971 . ,be-
cause only the hogs which index-
ed 100 or, better qualified for the
federal deficiency payments.
If 'you as a producer had less
than 2/3 of, your hogs index 100 or .
better in 1971,' your hogs were be-
ow averagewiality. _ _
The remedy is to 'upgrade your
breeding herd. Lists of weighed
and. backfat probed gilts and
-boars—can be—consulted -at our
office in Walkerton. If you. buy
weaners and know where they
come from a progressive wean-
ling pig producer woad he-inter=
ested to know what his weaners
index when they reach market.
If you don't know who raised
the pigs you buy, there is very
little that can be done to improve
your average market index.
