ALFALFA VARIETIES
There are two types of alfalfa
recommended in Ontario- - the
Flemish or early maturing var-
ieties like Saranac and the Stan-
dard or medium maturing variet-
ies•like Vernal.
' The Flemish types start growth
earlier in the spring and provide
_more and earlier aftermath pro-
duction than-the--i—Wi -
On the other hand the Standard
varieties have better winter hard-
iness, stand wet feet better and •
are more suitable as pastures.
Saranac is probably the most
popular Flemish type in this .area.
It shows . good winterhardiness
-and excellent-yield
There are two new Flemish
types recommended for the first
-time_ this year _Anchor __a and.
Thor. In most characteristics
they are equal to' Saranac, . but
their ability to persist in a stand
is not known under our condit-
ions.
The varieties Alfa, Dupuits and•
_Glacier were removed from the
recommendations because of
their susceptibility to the disease
Bacterial Wilt. A susceptible 'Var-
iety will usually stay in a stand
for 2 - 3 years before it dies out.
Three medium maturing var-
ities which' were recommended
last year and again this year are.
-- Vernal, Iroquois 'and Titan.
All three varieties are winter
hardy, wilt resistant, and per-
sistent. Although these varieties
won't produce as much as the
Flemish types in one year, over
The lifTT)f-the stand they could
produce more. On fields with in-
adequate drainage, Iroquois is
bettek adapted than Vernal.
Three Standard varieties rec-
ommended for the first time are
- WL 202, WL 210. and '520. All
are more or' legs equivalent to
Vernal.
For .the early . varieties, like
Saranac, the grass used_in the
mixture should' be brome' or or-
chard. For the Standard varieties
like Vernal then use brome or
—timothy, orchard matures—too
early. •
