tended the .1-lurOn County Develop
'Dent Day, in Goderich on March
27th. One of the points in a brief
presented ,by Jack: asked Codnty
Council to support, the re-establish-
ment of the sugar beet industry in
. the Chatham area. Since this
farming operation was discontin-
ued abbut 5 years ago, sugar has
been imported. Housewives are
paying for the costly error of dep-
• ending on other. countries for. food ,
when a percentage of it could be
produced in our country.
The significance of Agriculture
is not always realized, as farm-
. ing is only part of the industry.
Farm machinery, fuel, tires,
fertilizer, feeds:, tile drainage,
building materials, insurance,
and many other related industries
are dependent on the farming
operation. A healthy farming
industry would mean a healthy
economy. In Ontario Agriculture
puts 1 1/2 billion dollars into the
• Provincial economy and is bigger
than the other 6 major industries.
