With the new Pickering generating station just opened, those in
charge of these multi-million dollar projects now find themselves with
a, lack of heavy water to make them productive.
It is difficult to understand how any \competent busiriess or-

SLATED FOR EXTINCTION! ,
"Can you imagine the reaction from local residents if suddenly
mEle day they were told that the villages of Dungannon or Ripley would
be eliminated in favour of a new airport?
Such a situation has been created just north-east of Toronto,
the site for the new international airport. The community of Brou-
gham, population about 306, will likely be eliminated.

pretty strong feelings and ties.
Sure there has to be an airport, and it has to be built somewhere,
and the location will probably be one which will'cause the least dis-
ruption to the lives of the least number of people.
The people of Brougham probably thought this way too until
they learned that they were marked for extinction.
Inflated property valueS will probably soothe some of the wounds
in Brougham., but when you call ,a---do-rdintin-ity-hOni,-1 take more

LuCknow Sentinel,
Lucknow,
Dear Sir ,
In the column "Weekly Press"
in Saturday's Kitchener;•Wa•terloo
Record, I noticed the item from
the Sentinel regarding Joe
Conley, and your query about
Leap Year. I am enclosing a
column, "Uncle Ray's Corner"
which I believe is the answer. I
recall my father telling us there
was no Leap Year in 1900: This
would seem to be the-reason Joe
Conley was 'cheated on one of
these parties'. You will not doubt
receive, dozens of other letters
about this, but here is my contri-

The need for Leap •Year's Day
came about because the yearly
trip around the sun takes a bit
more than 365 days. It requires

of day extra.
If we add up the extra •tirne in
four years, we have a:bout one day
of time.. That day is accounted
for by adding the 29th day to
February once in four years..
' To be exact, thesolar year
falls short of an extra quarter day
by 11 minutes and 14 and .three-

RATHER UNBELIEVABLE!
An announcement last week indicated that a shortage of "heavy
water" may force the Douglas Point nuclear power station to shut
down for six months. -
Heavy water is used as a coolant and moderator in nuclear -
powered reactors. Canada currently imports much of its requirements
from the U.S., Sweden, Russia, Great Britain and Argentina.
A heavy water plant at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, owned by the
province of Nova Scotia was scheduled to produce in 1966 but is now
