FROM THE NAPANEE BEAVER
Members of the Ontario Secondary School TeaChers' Federation recently graded
their school boards again,'and .teachers in Lennox and Addington County decided their
trustees, were poor in, three areas out of , four, and only adequate in the lough:The
categories had to do with the board's..,attitude toward improving the quality of education;
the board's good, relations with teachers and administrators; conditions in school; and if
trie'oard adequately fulfills the educational needs of the community.
Perhaps few employees ever have high praise for their employers--not even. at The ,
Napanee Beaver-So 'one can hardly credit the view of teachers toward their board as
objective. There are employees who do respeCt their employers, but. we ,suspect this is
largely in private enterprise. It doesn't seem to apply among school teachers, anyway.
The unfair aspect of the matter, however, is that the teachers adopt this smear •
tactic as a means 'of embarrassing school.trustees throughout Ontario. It would be
interesting to see the reaction if school boards started rating teachers as trustees thought
of them, and announcing the results. That would call for a grey listing; at feast. It would
be a good idea 'if boards started rating teachers on merit, anyway, even if they didn't
announce their results. It mightimprove the quality of teaching in the province.
By the present method we only-h•. - I - the opmion,poll
doesn't hurt the boards as much a' the teachers may think. In .fact, it probably does the
teachers more harm than good, so far as public opinion is concerned.
