flAME AGAINST THE DARKNESS:
' The small Arab city of Bethlehem, with .a population of about
23,000 is, at this moment, in occupied territory just as it was under
Roman rule when Christ was born. '
An. Israeli military, administration is in control and all the bit,
terness and -tension which =keep Arab and Jew -hostile, seethe__through.
it, just as they do. through. Jerusalem'' only five miles away.
Yet in spite, of this continuing feud between two peoples ,and
the equally dangerous Arab infighting, tourists and ' Christian pi'-
,
il. grims will gather as always on : Christmas Eve in the Shepherds''
.fields below the city,:. They will swarm into the ancient. Church 'of +the"
Nativity, in whose -grotto tradition ° says the manger stood, and ::pack
the paved square on which the fortress - like edifice stands.
The square has a symboliccontext, for across from the church,
a mosque:. thrustsits minaret imperiously'. into the, December 'sky. A
strange setting indeed in : which to celebrate the coming: of the Prince
of.Peace.
Yet not so "strange. Genuine peace is no sentimental state . of
quiescence; it must be won. The birth of a Babe in a frame of cotton
fluff, and tinsel could hold no balm for our. torments. "
A CHRISTMAS. MESSAGE
FROM THE
LUCKNOW MINISTERIAL
ASSOCIATION •
Christmas is the , day ,whenthe intent be-,
came actual; . for on that day, through the
power
'of, God, Y Mar- gave to. our. Lord a body
suffer which
He could for those whom He
loved. She gave : Him a heart to 'be opened and
reyealed in love by a spear. She gave Him
hands and feet to be nailed to the cross, She
gave Him blood, to be shed for the sins of
many. She gave Him flesh, to be hung against,
a darkened sky.. She, gave Him ahuman
nature, that He might be like us in all things,
save sin. .
There was no Christmas Tree in the crib.
The Christ -Tree was reserved for His death.
The withered .Christmas Trees which are
thrown in thestreet in, January are a symbol
1. ,of Him who was rejected on ' a tree.
The Christ Child wants us in our complete-.
mess; our. ;whole body, • our whole minds` our
whole heart: He wants less the gifts, than the
giver.
May every happiness and peace be yours
this Christmas and; may the blessing of Christ's
love bewith you 'all 'on life's way during 'the
coming year.

The real Bethlehem is a far' more fitting backdrop for what
Christians call the Incarnation : God with us: There is validity and
power in the . emergence of a' mighty hope rising from here like a
flame, to beckon men from where they are to where they might be.
Thank Goal for Christmas.. .

THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ARE SHINING
•
All over Canada' the Christmas lights are shining.: Blue green,
gold and red : they sparkle, their.radiance displacing shadows here,
highlighting them there, both within doors : and without Nothing could
be a moreca t symbol of-thisso -
fear of our unhappy :fall, more welcome. How we need light!
Christmas of course can be mere escape— for. some even an.
ori' - but for the thoughtful this returning celebration of the Birth
helps to restoreour sanity: and our humanity:.
Machines -may be es eryvrbere, but .Christmas reminds_ us that
it is man who makes`,. and ,operates them. Laws may rule us, Or try
to but it is men Who, make the laws. Every new thrust forward, every
dreani that lifts us .even briefly from our sorry ruts. begins in .some
human heart. Here lie buried the seeds of our hope' and our despair.
For a few 'precious weeks, thank God, hope is once more ascenh
dant Wa sdare believe that better and. more significant tomorrows«may.
ev=en now be lying in the cradle` 'of Canadian homes.` as once the
-lay for all men in. a Bethlehem tnar:_ r
