The. problem of fire truck followers 'is one which presents many
• frustrations to. the LucknOw Fire Department and most fire Depart-
ments in the area. ' • .
'When the fire whistle blows, it seems to bring :out the "demon"
within sonie. people: Cars race to the fire hall, hoping to get a head
. start on the fire truck .to the scene' of thefire. To , help?, certainly
not, but merely to 'satisfy an inner desire to see flames envelop Some-
• one's hone or property: , • • :
/We are as, guilty 'as 'anyone , inf 1 o lowing the fire truck, but we
have always excused ourselves because we were going as a -news-,
man in the .pursuit of a story.: We do, however, try to respect the
• urgency. of the Fire Department In getting there and •try to keep
out of their way. i• • • . •
Such is not the: case..With all drivers who, pass.: 'everything on
the road, sometimes includingthe fire truck, to get tothe scene and
get themselVes in the may. of those who are trying to assist the person
• in trouble. ' • • ..; • ' '

A, few -months ago, we'. had occasion to. 'see a load of firemen
'sit at the corner of Gough' and Havelock Streets waiting for'" a chance
to get Intothe line of traffic' proceeding to a fire just k north of toWn..
'Such ridiculous occurrenees happen too often, although with the newly,
acqUired rescue car, painted red with light and siren, only themost
'inconsiderate individual will now try to beat the firemen to the scene
f.,Oe fire.

We find it most difficult to , concur with the vacation' schedule
