CANTIN C LA I Mtd DAMAGE. —The article
on St.. Joseph, which appeared in the
Toronto News a couple of weeka ago,
and which was republished in a num-
ber of papers, has raised the ire of Pro-
moter Cantin, as the following press
despatch shows: "N. M. Cantin, of
St. Joseph, in Huron County, has
brought an action at Osgoode Hall for
850,000 damages against the Toronto
News for alleged libel, setting forth in
the statement of claim that the News
maliciously decried and traduced the
town of St. Joseph, in the county of
Huron, in which the plaintiff is large-
ly interested as owner, and otherwise
stating that special injury was inflict-
ed upon the plaintiff by publication in
the news of April 13, o1 an article en-
titledand subheaded: "The Romanceof
St. Joseph, Huron County —City on

Shores of Lake Huron—A City with a
Harbor—One is a pure Myth and the
Other an Impossibility.” Mr. Cantin
claims damages for special loss in his

CE3ETATION. — Reports from vari-
ous parts of the county :how that
vegetation was almost at a standstill
during the cold spell that ended in the
heavy frost of Friday morning of last
week, and they also generally con-
flrtn the statement that the fruit buds
were not sufficiently advanced to be
injured thereby. The mine following
the frost started seeds, caused buds to
break, ;and gave pastures an excellent
start, but the change to coldweather
on Sunday caused another stoppage
of growth. Although seeds have
made poor progress, pastures have
done fairly web, so there is every
prospegt for a good supply of butter
and cheese, and big herds for export
when autumn comes.
Foa A SILVER Cur.—The Goderich
Gun Club has started a handicap
shoot forasilvercup, the trophy to go to
the member killing the greater num-
ber of birds in six shoots. The handi-
cap is a novel one, as it is made after
each shoot, and it is possible a shooter
may be classed after each shoot. The
number of birds flred at, 25, may
added to after°`each match; for in-
stance, those getting 17 or upwards
will have but the 25, but those below
that number will have extra birds, not
exceeding seven, according to their
scores. At the opening shoot on Fri-
day
riday evening only five members were
present. but theabsentees may come in
at the next contest by taking the first
25 birds in the meantime. The shoot-
ing of those present was as follows:

Committee of the House of Commons,
on Thursday, the charter of a propos-
ed lide of railway was renewed, which
has special interest for this section of
country. This was the Huron and
Ontario Railway Company. The
charter was originally granted in 1800,
but for some reason or other nothing
further was done. The company has
been reorganized, a Dr. Robertson be-
ing the promoter. He claims to have
now ample capital to go ahead with
the building of the road, as soon as
the charter was renewed, which has
just been done. The road is to be an
electric one, starting from Port Perry
and terminating at Kincardine, with
branches to Goderich, and Midland.
It contemplates passingg through
Turnberry, Morris, West Wawanosh,
Ashfield and Colborne; and is calcu-
lated to touch Wingham, Lueknow,
Dungannon, with possibly a few other
minor points. The promoters of the
road assert that it is their intention to
go ahead with construction at once.

OBIT. —On Sunday morning two
weeks ago, at her home on the front
road, Stanley, there passed away the
soul of Mrs. Jamey Parke, at the age
of 84 years and 10 months. Mrs.
Parke was one of the pioneers of
Stanley township, having settled with
her husband on the Goshen line nearly
QO years ago. After clearing and
making comfortable a good farm they
retired to a smaller place near Bayfield
where they have taken life more easily
for the last 20 years. She was a kind
friend and good neighbor, as was
testified by the large attendance on
Tuesday, who gathered to show their,
last tribute of respect. Het home
had always a guest chamber ready
and a seat at the table for the minister
of God, and in the early days when
church services were rare the minister
on his rounds made it his regular rest-
ing place. After 58 years of married
life and rearing six children, this is
the first time death has entered their
home. The funeral service was held
on Tuesday, the Rev. Mr. Jennings,
ineumisent of Bayfield, presiding,
assisted by Rev. Rural Dean Hodgins,
of Seaforth, a former pastor. She
leaves behind to mourn her loss her
aged hushand and three suns and
three daughters, George and .luhn of
Manitoba, Rev. J. ar., at Water•sburl,:
Mrs. H. Elliott, of Goderu•It townshie,
and Mary and Kato at house.

The two cars contained 317 annuals,
the largest contributors heing Messrs.
Bell -12, weighing 144Jibi—and Vand-
eugh — the same number, weighing
2100 lbs. The hogs were a fine sample
and the large number shows that hog
raising is now a leading lino with
Huron farmers. The rnoney paid out
for the hogs exceeded $3,700 and for
the bovines over 81000.
The [Ire department had a run last
Friday morning, part of it being
caused by a misleading statement as
to the location of the blaze which was
at the residence of Mr. McLeod,
corner of Britannia Road and Wel-

kitchen roof, perhaps from a spark,
and notwithstanding the exertions of
neighbors, had gained headway when
the hose cart arrived, but two heavy
streams of water soon drenched it nut
and the damage was not beyond
repair. With the help of students
from the Collegiate and neighbors all
the furniture had been removed.
