OF FRUIT CASE
BY;REV.: DUNCAN .McTAVISH,
On the farm to'the east of the old
homestead lived a.grand old couple
by the name of 'Adam 'and Susan
Wilson and :their .;two sons,..Oliver
and .Edmund ; "Mr. and Mrs: Wilson
•:lived' to be quite `old . She was a
witty Irish lady, and' passed on to her
son Oliver, one of thefinest gifts
of true wit that 1 have ever known.
.But there came a time, when old
age.•began to take its toll and -the':
"Golden Bowl" was broken and her'
memory began to go.
I was a frequent visitor .to. the
Wilsonhome despite the fact that
the old man jocularly reminded me
that he didn't want boys;'
fooling around with' his. girls, which
of.,course were non-existent. My
chief attraction was Mrs. Wilson's
fruit cake 'and Mr. Wilson's good
applies. She always' had on 'hand
two kinds. a. light and a dark
'cake;'Personally, .I have always
' pKeferred the dark kind but offered
no objection to two pieces even
though"one•'of them was the, light.,
Variety,.
The house.was. small with only a
living -room and kitchen combined
and, two bedrooms to the south.
There was a bedroom upstairs
which the sons occupied. On'the
east• side, next the ;road was the •
"spare room" = a term that has
',Almost ditappeared in these times.
But the spare room in those days
,was not only a place to accomm-
odate guests when they -carne to
stayovernight,. It was a place to
store certain extras that'requirred
careful laying awa r and might be,

' Under the bed You would often -
find ,some ,small.tin' boxes in which
the housewife would have laid
away out of sight certain
goodies which she kept for
unexpected visitors, ,it was in such
a big red can that Mrs:. Wilson'
kept her fruit cakes that, delighted
my boyish heart to say nothing„.of.._.'

reason there was no fruit cake on
hand, the 'old man would appear
with reinforcements' front the
'cellar where he kept his
apples. Even in the .spring of the„'
year, he, would bring 'forth Kings •
and Spies. as firm and solid as
thoughthey' had beenkept in
modern refrigeration. I need riot'.,
elaborate on the factthat they
made a• good substitute.
