_WEDNESDAY; MAY 17th, 1t67

1967 1by JOHN W. FISHER
CENTENNIAL COMMISSi'ONER
It's all true. Our publicists and
advertising copy writers for a long
time have been saying that Expo
67 is the greatest show on earth.
Itis.
Youwould think that some of
us who, in . the past few' years,
have been . close to ' Expo planning
- and preparations would have been
a bit blase on opening day.. It
turnedout that, despite all our
advance knowledge and familiarity
with Canada's greatest Centennial ..
event of all, we were as :spellbound
as a prairie farm boy visiting Expo
on his first trip away from. home.
0.O( all my kaleidoscopic "impres
• sons of Expo there is one which
comes blazing above them all. 'It
is the impression that here, among
the glittering best;and the com
petitive, . nationalistic pride of 62
:.countries, is 'the great co-operative
spirit, of mankind
The'Expo'planners who adopted, :.
;the Man and:' His World theme
and,' the sub -themes which 'also'
underline the' hopeful. 'spirit of '•our
• World, can take much credit. How-
ever
owe ver the: participating nations have
•
so responded to • the . theme ,,that
the ' mood and the spirit of 'Expo,.
unmistakably communicate. the• ,
message that;man's'hoPe' is above
•. all nations (One almost feels this
message. while walking , over the
' waters of 'the St. Lawrence on
'Cosmos Bridge, .the link between s'
the gigantic, inspiring displays of
the' United States and the Union
of .Soviet Socialist Republics.).
As a Canadian naturally I ant .
proud that this .great "international`
'gathering ,is taking ' place ' in my
'Country; -.But, .much more signifi,
cant to me is. that the message of
'hope and the positive' spirit of man.
reverberating from the Expo =
islands are so in harmony with
all that, is symbolized '. 13),'
Centennial
Whenwe think :about the •past.
100 'years. 'of our Confederation
and ,.consider the best • ways of'
improving it for Canadians of
every ethnic origin, cultural and
linguiitic'.background, we are .dev
eloping the . kind of spirit ' 'that
not only "Canada needs, 'but also
the .wholeworld' needs. And when
we think .., well and long ' we' .come
to the' realization that indeed;
the 20th century, welive in only;
one community -the : great' com-
munity' of man.
