' Lucknow Sentinel, Dear Sir; The Arts Council of Ontario, and •the Community Programs Branch of. the °Ontario, Department of Education.have co-operated, in the formation of a .Craft Founda • ''tion to serve the artisans of Ont - 'arm, This move grew' out of a Con- Terence of craftsmen•held at Codehiching, in :1965 , Among the considerations<'which prompted thii move Was a Concern-for'Can 7 adian Culture' An important part, of that culture•is the work of Can- . adian artists` and designers. Many of whom have a profession abi1- ity and only 'lack a market. *An- other part of this native .culture is the use of the leisure tinge in- creasingly available through shor- ter working hoists. For these, some. training and instruction is., necessary to. make the creative impulse a satisfying experience. From a very practical. point. of .'view, it is economically desirable! to. encourage Canadian craftsmen. It is estimated that about one tenth of the money spent each ,year in. Canada by tourists for mementoes to take home,. is- .. spent on Canadian -made goods, The rest is':spent on imported ' goods, so that the net profit for the province's tourist industry in. this field: could be ten times what: it • is now.:• :To make beginning to ach . ieve some.of:'the objectives rec- • ommended by the Conference of Craftsmen, an Interim -Local- ' Committee is anxious.tei know .the following ; -(1) Who are the craftsmen in the counties of Grey and 'Bruce?' (2) Who,are the re= tailers whet :feature the products Of ; Canadian Craftsmen? (3) Who,' are the retailers who would feat- ure Canadian crafts if they knew :where to get them? • So far the committee 'can offer to the craftsmen :and 'the outlets_ who feature their products a pub- lic relations service for the com- ing tourist season', so that visitors are made conscious of local . • crafts •arid where to find them: If those concerned will send their names to the office of the Director of Recreation, City Hall. Owen Sound, the committee•will • •make an.index to be part of`the .tourist information service, . and :C.=F.O, S; will publicize the in dex as a public service for the . duration of the summer season.' --The-committee-is-}anxious--to have the names and addresses of all interested craftsmen, in :order to form a properly elected committee ,to represent this area.
