LUCKNOW DISTRICT HIGH SCH(
THE FUTURE lS IN DOUBT.
For many Months now, the fibre of the Lucknow District
High School ha,s.been discussed. We have beard discussion over.:
the coffee cups, we have heard it in living rooms and ewe have
Beard it at public meetings.. It has been a .topic of much dis.
cession in the area and the trend of the conversation hasalways
led up to the conclusion that "its days are numbered".
It will therefore be no treat news .to the community that
this very subject . is the main topic confronting the local high
school board atthinvery moment.
It was a,,,battle to get a district high school in Lucknow or-
iginally
r iginally and one. of the main drawbacks at that time was lim-
ited enrolment. It would be mainly this fact which would end
a district high school here, if this should be the ' case.
/ The advent of vocational training programs by the de-
partment tment of education m the past few years has caused the
enrolment of the students attending, Lucknow District High
School to drop with vocational pupils being transported to Wing -
ham . District High School where this course is available. It was,
not practical to provide these facilities at every school In Ont-
ario, and for this reason; Lucknow pupils must obtain this part-
icular type of 'education at Wingham, ' the closest ; centre Pro-
viding it. An expected increase in the future in the use of these.
facilities by .Lucknow? students would only greater aggravate
the silage ofenrolment here and make it more impractical
to continue Lucknow as a centre of secontdary. learning.
Meetings . have been held with the' department of education
by the Lucknow Distriet. High School Board accompanied by
district elementary boards .jbcr best determine the future sof the
Lucknow District High calabool•
The . Sentinel has discussed the matter with two members
of the delegation, and although! the. discussions with :depart-
meat officials were "only discussions," with no concrete decis-
ions made, it was agreed that an early decision will have ,to be
made on whether. or not Lucknow District High School will .con-
tinue as a centre of secondary education for this, community. ;'
The Sentinel does not wish .to be an alarmist, : and we 'd0
not want to heap extra problems on the shoulders' of the ,school
board -who will have the hardest decision of their term in office
to make, but' the fact remains that this subject has become •
street calk, it is no longera matter known only te the boards
concerned, and the public have a right : to know what is being
done by . their, elected and appointed members,....
4
We donot want to • infer that the Lucknow District' High ..
School Board was attempting : to hold—hack any.of what ' has
taken place. Itwas they who came to the Sentinel and offered
to provide a press release on the subject for which we were,::
quite grateful. But much of the press release dealt with matters
which had'appeared in recent issues, and in view of the "street
talk". on the subject, and theimportance of .::thedecision to be
made, we felt it did not
go far enough. , We felt it our duty to
present to the public what, we know of the matter to date. The
High School board were in agreement with this view. '
Several things which make. a ° decision on the high school:
very urgent are, the fact that Lucknow Public School will soon be
90 years. old and in the present thinking of the department
of . education, . does not provide facilities necessary foil element-
ary instruction ' in this day and age. It would seem foolish to
•finalize plans for further 'additions or a brand new public school
if the Lucknow District High School would be abandoned in the
Kinloss School Area Board are planning an addition to their
school and Ashfield and ' West Wawanosh Townships ' are pre-
sently planning the building of a new school. These Townships,
along. with Lucknow; are all part of the Lucknow District High
School and the High; School' Board feel every effort shduld be
made to make it known to these boards of the possibilities of '
the closing of tuelmow High Schoolso that they Might take
this into consideration .when makingtheir • plans. ,
tf
The London meeting with the department . of education
t1hih was attended byall. these boards, recommended that if
Lucknoww District High School . would be closed in the future,
the building could be used as an intermediate school for grades
7 and 8 throughout the entire area. Department of Education
"' officials feel this would be a perfect set up and this is a Mkt -
ter for future thought by. all concerned.
The Lucknow District High School serves all these munici-
palities and the board is ing to make sure that all Arlt-
palities would have an opportunity to make use of it in the
future.
The Lucknow High School Board deserve great credit for
grasping this problem as it erdsts" today. They • very. well
put it off for a future board to but this ,group . of
men realize the importance
of e1 • ion being made now, and
they -have come face-to-face with it.
