On Saturday word was received from
Hillsdale, Mich., to the effect that Ed
Pelton, sou of Mr John Belton, of East
W4wauoah, was dangerously ill with
balm malarial fever.
blrq Bain is to be postmistress at the
Sun6ff postoffice after this. There
hake eeu a great many changes in onr
poataasters and -one reason is, we sap
"pone, the salary is so miserably small,.
Some aaeri ligious person or persons
entered the basement of the Congrega-
tional chur.h Wingham, on Sunday last,
during service, and stole therefrom sev-

The essrs. Tyreman Brothers have
rented t teir farm, on the Oth concession
of McKillop, to the Messrs. Chesney
Brothers, for a term of five years, at an
annual rental of $400. The fain con-
tains 157 acres.
A Temperance. Convention for the
East Biding of Huron will be held in
Brussels, ma Tuesday, November 8th.
In the evening of that day a public meet-
ing will bo held in the Town Hall to be
addressed by Rev. W. S. Griffin, D.D.,
of Guelph, a well known temperance ad-
vocate, and others.
On Tuesday last as Mayor Beatty, of
Seaforth, was passing one of the hotels in
town, he noticed that a disgraceful fight
was in progress is the bar -room. Al-
though there were a number of person
present no one seemed to make any effort
to seoure peace. The Mayor stepped in
and separated the combatants. and a
threat to have them locked up soon
quieted the turbulent spirits. -.
Messrs John and Ptter Cameron, of
the 4th concession of Stanley, had the
misfortune to lose a valuable thorough-
bred shorthorn cow the other day.
With the aid of two veterinary surgeons
she gave birth to a dead calf, which caused
her death. She was purchased a few
years ago fioor Mr Thos. Russel, Us -
borne, and her death is a heavy lose to
- the MeserlCameron.
The Expositor says:—Mr John Lands -
borough, Sr., of the 4th concession of
Tuckeremith, died on Tuesday last.
Mr Landsborongh ltas, for several
years, been troubled more or leas with
an affection of the heart, but until
within the past six months no serious re-
sults were anticipated from it. Since
that time, however, he has been very
poorly and for six weeks he ]las been
confined to bed most of the time. Under
these circumstances therefore, the end
was not unexpected. Both Mr Lands -
borough and his family were felly pre.
pared for the great change, and under
such circumstances death is robbed of
more than half its sting. He was a native
of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, and was
the eldest sou of the late Wo?, Lands -
borough. He was in his seventy-fifth
year, and came to this country with hie
parents and other members of hie family
in the year 1834. He then located the
farm on which he continued to reside
until his death, his brothers Samuel and
James owning and occupying the two
adjoining farms, while Robert has one
about a mile distant on the same conces-
sion. Like the rest of the sturdy pion-
eers who came from the same locality in
Scotland and settled in this county, he
took hla farm when it was an unbroken

fertile and
com[orlhr Ule homestead. Hs -was marri-
ed after seining to this country, but his
wife died abort 19 years ago. He had a
family.f eight children, but only three
survive him, one son and two daughters.
He was a consistent member of the Pres-
byterian church, and for many' years was
au elder of Mr. Gl sham's congregation
in Egmondville. Lately, however, he
has ►Seen connected with Union church,
Brucefield. In politics he was a first
Liberal, and was a great admirer of the
late Her. Genige Brown. He was a
man of the moat unsullied character, of
the strictest integrity and was in every
settee a good and worthy citizen. His
remains were interred in the Harpnrbey
cemetery on Thursday, and a very large
number turned out to pay the last trib-
uta of respect to the mortal remains of a
most worthy man.

The supply of cattle was not -large.
Drovers asked higher rates and butchers
bought as few as _possible. Some of the
cattle from Calgary have been bought
by butchers, though it is probable most
of them will be shipped to Britain.
Superior cattle from 4c to 4}e. Sheep
and lambs are not so numerous ; prices
higher, from $3 to $5 for sheep and $2
to $4 for lambs. Calves scarce and
higher. Hogs in fair supply at about
le. The horse market is very quiet, but
during the early part of the week
was a fair inquiry for common horses.
There were sent to the United States 43
horses, costing $3,314.

Many people are carried away with the idea that, Commercial Union
with the United States would give us manufactured goods at a great-
ly reduced cost, while, at the same time, the value of our farm pro-
duce would be much enhanced. "Distant fields look green," and we
propose to show you that it is indeed the "distance" that lends the
"enchantment to• the view" in this case, for the apparent verdure of.
Yankee markets is simply the greenness in Uncle Sam's eyes, which
are filled with envy because BEESLEY & CO are offering for sale
goods of such exquisite quality, and at such temptingly low prices
that his fears are aroused, lest not only Canadians stay at, home and
buy our goods, but that the most enterprising of his subjects also
be attracted to Clinton to make their purchases, and so the disappoint-
ed eagle screameth when he views the prospect of his intended prey
escaping from his talons., If you wish to wear
