wishes—even if you are not running

Nominate men for public office
whom you would not Hesitate to
place your personal business in
their hands if you desired it care-
fully, capably and consistently at-
tended to. If the rule is followed
there will not be much doubt as to
the calibre of those who will fill
official position. We have no
patience with the people who are
always ready to ,wry "graft" but
we are decidedly in accord with
those Who desire to note progress-
iveness and permaneey on the part
of those who sit at the Municipal
Boards and hold intimafe connec
tion with the affairs of the tax-
payers. There is ample room for a
deeper interest on the part of the
thinking public in these matters
and crowded nomination meetings,
with helpful suggestions and words
of praise when deserved, are among
the ways of showing it.
Permit us to suggest that a very,
appropriate Christmas gift to the
absent member of your family
would be a subscription to The New
'Era for 1911. For the small sum of
$1.00 you will live vividly in their
'memory at least 52 times and re-
ceive many a "thank you" for your
practical Santa Clause action. You
are not always very regular with
your correspondence remember but
we will guarantee to prove "John-
nie on the spot" if you intrust us
with the pleasant privilege of help-
ing you out. What do you say?

THE. MEN OF THE NORTH.
By William Talbot Allison.
[William Talbot Allison, was born
at Unionville; Ont.. 1874. He is a
graduate of Victoria University, and
has written oeca: Tonal verse for the
magazine. He lives in Toronto.]:
From out the cold house of the north
Thor's stalwart children hurtled
forth,
Forsool. their sullen seas;
Southward the .xothie wairons rolled,
While bards foretold a realm of gold,
And fame, and boundless ease.
Loud rang the shields with sounding
k•.iows,
The furious din of war arose
Adowu the dreary land;
But' Wedon held -there in .hia ken,
I fel rased the Teuton men
13y every hostile Mince. .
At length. one day, , the host was
thrilled
At that „glad cry the foremost 8hri11-
cd+
"The sea! A southern sea !"
As breathless stood the northmen
f there,
1 The wind swept through. tinily yellow
hair,
And sang of erupery.
Rome's doom waa written in thele
eye,,
Fell tumult under sunny ,skies,
Death on the Golden Horn:
Now, by the rood, what southern
slaves.
Or land that any south sea laves,
Can face the northern born?
