This Pig Made Money
A little ,affair which created much
amusement and incidentally made $50
for dialled Cress Society was pulled off
at the.auction sale of W. R. Macdonald.
3rd Con. of 'Huron, on Wednesday of
• last week. Certain young ladies always
on the lookout for the main chance in
the in-tereit3 s otthe Red -Cress and -pa,• -
triOtie funds induced Mr. Macdonal& to
donate a *fine young pig -7 -one of the
mortgage -lifting sort -in the intereSts
of the Red Cross. The ladies then can-
vaised the crew& at the sale, selling'
tickets at 25c., the holder of a pm -denier
number to become owner of the porker.
Mr. Patterson,. a 'chance Visitor from
MelforkSaslc:. held the lucky number.
Coming frorn a boom town like Mel-
ford, Mr. Patterson couldn't use a "'mort-
gage lifter", so he imniediately re -donat-
ed the pig to the Red Cross. This time
it was to be put up at auction. Mr. W.
-R. McDonald, the original owner, was
the.highest bidder, and paid $8.25 for
the pig. • The tale of tickets had realized
$40.06,and Mr. Macdonald added enough
to the price of: the pig to round out the
$50.00, , •
. Mr. MacDonald had a big sale, and
there was a bigernwc1. Bidding was ac-
tive throughout and proceeds. ran up to
nearlt$4,700. Mr. Meedenald has sold

An Ugly Practical Joke' • '.
• On opening his house door one even-
ing xecently Mr. Dawson, of the
-Turnberry-Culross boundary, discoVered
a sosiiimous looking box on the door
step.' It was a. tin box; from the end
protruded a partially buroed fuse, and
on the side of -the box was :Painted a
black hand. Oil examination the 1x
was found to contain three telephone
•dry cells. It was, of course, a sham 1
infernal machine and evidently intended
to, give the people of the hOuse scare.
However, these days when "peeple are
hearing so much about bombs- andin-'

sort of,practicafjoke . too. far, and the
party who Worked the joke was very.

The spelling match was- between: boys
and girls, captained respectively by
Clarence MacDonald and Dorothy Doug-
las. Words to be spelled were taken froni
the Bible,and when we say these were
confined;to 'proper names one may imag-
ine the sort of brain -twisters the pupils
hertto encounter. The rank of boys was
goon thinned and itlooked like • an easy
win for the gitls, but a nutnber' of them
went down together, and soon the cap-
tains faced each other alone. The Con.
test, however, was not tong Miss Doug-
las finally spelling .a 'Word which sent.

death of Mr. H, J. Trevett, whlcli oCcur-

attended by local lodges of the I.O.F:
'and A.O.U.W., took,place on Saturday,
the 12th, to Greenhill:cemetery.
