'We frequently hear it Said that long
tenure of power tends to debility in a
party. It would -be unwise, however,
to accept this dictum without qualifi-
cation. Perhaps it should be said that
excessive strength iu a. party lir power,
is a graver danger to its staying quail -
ties, making it lees regardful of its dut-
lest° the public. CertainlY there are. no
indications that the Dominion Liberal
party is less devoted to iteprogramme
of progressive legislation and clean and
wise administration than it has been in
the past ; and we believe that while it
so conducts itself, it will retain the
confidence of the people. Speaking of
the duration of governments, the Win -
nipeg Free Press save:
The Dominion Liberal party has car-
ried tour general elections. The Con-
servative party, nailer the leadership
ot Sir John MacDonald, also carried
four general elections, The difference
in the recorded -this two parties is that
the latterparty lost strength in every
appeal to the electors, while theparty
at present in power has gone from i
strength to strength, and n the new
Parliament will be faced by an Opposi-
Lion lamentably weaker in every respect
than the Liberal Opposition was in the
Parliament which sat from 1891 to 1896
-the last in which theConservative.party
had a majority. The empirareCordlor
length of tenure of office ioy one party
is held by the party in power in New
Zealand, whieh went to the country last
month and won its seventh successive
victory in a general elections campaign
This succession of victories, however,
has not been achieved under one lead-
er. The party ie the party of the late
Sir Richard Seddon, whose successor
in the leadership and in the premier
ship is Sir Joseph Ward. But though
the Ward Government has been re-
turned to power, the Opposition claim,
what the Opposition in this country
are far from being able to claim, that
there is clear evidence that the elect-
ors are inclining to a cbange. Two of
the Ministers in the Ward Govern-
ment were defeated, and the weaken-
ing of the. Government. which has had
its majority considerably 'reduced, has
partly been caused hy thirOpposition
of the,Labor party. The most striking:
feature 6f the elections has been the
voting on• the liquor question, which
has resulted . in a great extension of
the prohibition area,
The record of the late Sir (Myer
Mowat. however, eclipses that of Sir
Richard Seddon, Premier of New Zea-
land. Sir Oliver -became Premier in
1872, and subsequently carried five gen-
eral elections. He became Minister of
Justice in the Dominion Government,
and the Ontario Liberals afterward
carried three general elections in the
Province before their defeat in 1935. A
record like that is not likely soon to be
beaten.

In Toronto University cireles this

These dark-skinned students came
to Toronto when term opened and
have started at McMaster University,
both taking the full first year's arts'
course, and, although they have not
as yet decided. how long they will re-

on for. second year work next year.
Mr. Solomon and Miss Isaac came
from far -away India. with Miss Arm-

Rangoon for several years. '
Miss Armstrong and her father and
mother tire the Baptist missionaries

do not work among the Barmans.
Miss Armstrong's father is Rev. W. F.
Armstrong, and her mother is known
to hosts of people on Canada as Miss
Maria Norrie, founder' of the Mission-

These Indian students wilt= Miss
Armstrong has brought to Toronto are
teachers itt a Rangoon school in which
400 Indian boys and girls' are getting
an education which -can qualify them
for Government positions.
' Both Mr, Solomon and Miss Isaac
obtained their first-class certificate of
the College of Preceptors, London.
Eng., about a year ago. They passed
this examination at .Rangoon, after
training in Norris College, an institu-

One of the most interesting aural -

of the noble hard of women who nurs-

the Crimea has passed away -in Moth-

tained the great age of 94 years, but
her faculties were unimpaired. The
great :value Of the services rendered
by the first party • of nurses 'who went
out with Miss Nightingale led Mr.
SidneyHerbert to request Miss 'Stan-
ley, sister of the 'former Dean of '
Westminster, to select. further kein-
forcements for her, and letters were
written to all .the convents in Ireland
for. trained volunteers. In the Com-
munity -Room of the Convent of Mer-
cy, Carlow, that letter was read aloud.,
and all the nuns expressed their de-
sire to go. Slater Mary Aloysius. and
Sister Mary Stanislaus, both devoted
and enthusiastic, and personfdly
strong, were chosen' and the depar-
ture was made withall promptitude.
At Kingstown they joined others of
the Irish contingent, and started amid
loud demonstrations of admiration
and approval, In London they re-,
eeitreci the benediction of Dr: Man-
ning. Sailing from Porthioeuth, they
traveled "across France, , embarking
again at Marseilles. They had a
wretched passage on the old Egyptts
to Gallipoli,where they disembarked.
