Entertaining the masses
The congregations of both Blyth and Brussels United
Churches held Christmas pageants on Sunday featuring
both adults and children from the congregation. The final
Advent services of the season also featured special music
from the church choirs and a special guitar group. Here, in
Blyth, Lavern Clark, left, oversees the proceedings, while a
handful of children work to get into the Christmas spirit.
From left: Clark, Bo Wharton, Taylor Wharton and Lily
Fraser. Connor Brooks is playing guitar in the background.

Bethlehem. Births are a natural thing
and happen every day, but the
mysteries of this specific birth have
been passed through story and song
for years. We all recall the first time
we heard about the Blessed Birth. It
involved a partnership, the journey,
the angels and the star. Over the
years, details have been
acknowledged and the story grows
with us — the donkey, the birthplace,
more angels, shepherds and wise
people with camels. Add in a little
Christmas spirit and the details vary
every year, but the theme remains. A
baby portrays love, people respond
in various ways to love, life goes on
no matter the circumstances, and the
world is a good place.
Our part in the story is to live
every day the hope, peace, joy and
love that is so important to the
Christmas story.
The folks at Brussels United were
in a happening spot. Bethlehem
came to church with the usual; a lot
of unusual angels, some pretty cute
shepherds and a few dubious kings.
Mary and Joseph arrived with their
own unique donkey, very friendly
relaxed and polite. While enjoying
the admiration of the villagers for a
job well done, Buddy, without the
grey ears and coat might be mistaken
for the VanderMeer's nice dog.
Scarves and stoles got the
congregation in the mood as they
were the village people in the story.
Generosity is one of the
remarkable things about Christmas;
secret gifts that hit the spot; offers of
time much needed and the words of
