MRES Grade 1 kids think Santa loves train sets
Angry Birds, rubber duckies and other toys
When it comes to which toys Santa plays with, Angry Birds, rubber duckies and super hero
toys. Back row, from left: Mrs. VanCamp, Dominic K., Leland F., Gabrielle D., Maya S., Edyn
B., Annah G., Izzy K. and Mrs. Binotto-Peel. Front Row: Leah W., Shaurya D., Addie A.,
Cardynn C., Alexis A., Hayden D., Jaycee J. and Michael M. Absent are Daniel E., Hayden A.
and Tyler J. (Denny Scott photo)
Santa Claus' toy chest is filled
with toy trains and toy elves, as well
as a slew of other fun -filled toys
according to Mrs. Binnotto-Peel's
Grade 1 students at Maitland River
Elementary School.
"Santa Claus plays with toy trains
because they are fun and he can make
his own. He always makes trains."
Hayden A.
"I think Santa Claus would like to
play with a rubber ducky. He
probably wants a warm bath after he
delivers all the toys. When I'm in the
bath, I have a ducky named Dotty
because it has black spots. Santa
probably has one like that too."
Addie A.
"Santa probably has a toy elf that
he can play with. He also has a toy
beard that he can put over his beard
so he can change the colour of his
beard whenever he wants."
Annah G.
"The toy that Santa Claus likes the
best is the train because it rolls
around and he can watch it and sit
back and look at it."
Gabrielle D.
"Santa would play with a drum.
It's not a drum you play with drum
sticks like the drummer boy in the
picture. It's a drum you play with
your hands."
Cardynn C.
"Santa would play with toy sleds
so he could see which one he likes
the best to fly in then have the elves
make him a new sled."
Michael M.
"Angry Birds."
Shaurya D.
"Santa probably likes dirt
bikes. He loves riding his sled so
he would love a dirt bike. I've seen
dirt bikes in real life and they are
fun."
Leland F.
"Santa would probably like a
teddy bear to take to bed with him
because they're soft and he can
make them as big as him so they can
keep him warm and soft when he
sleeps."
Jaycee J.
"He doesn't have toys. Santa plays
with his reindeer. They are just like
big dogs so he has to play with them
to keep them happy. He can
play with them when he isn't
sleeping."
Edyn B.
"Santa probably likes toy cars
because cars can drive and the horns
on cars honk and they are cool"
Izzy K.
"I think Santa would play with a
Santa toy. It would be a toy that
would look just like him and he
could have adventures with it." It
would have a magic hat."

Hogmanay important for Watt
Continued from page 19
and their celebration is more of a
communal family time," she said. "It
has a lot of visiting, laughter and
fun."
While Christmas is an important
holiday, Watt said that, due to her
family's Scottish ancestry,
Hogmanay also plays a big part in
her holiday celebration.
"It's just as important as
Christmas," she says, and most of
Scotland would agree with her as the
celebrations around Hogmanay tend
to dwarf those of Christmas.
Hogmanay is the term used for the
last day of the year in Scotland and
often traced back to Norse or Gaelic
traditions.

Customs of the holiday vary
throughout Scotland (and the world
where Scotish immigrants have
landed) and include gift -giving and
visiting friends on the first day of the
new year.
The most important visitors,
according to the tradition,
are the first visitors of the
year, called the "first-foot."
Watt explained that the first-foot,
or first visitors in the home, needed
to be friendly to ward off evil spirits
throughout the rest of the year. A
more recent tradition, however, has
replaced the first-foot with the first
message received on New Years
Day.

"I think Santa would have a toy
sled. He rides on his sled so he likes
to play like he is riding it when it's the
summer and that lets him remember
where everyone's houses are."
Maya S.
"Super hero toys."
Daniel E.
"I think Santa would make himself
a musical horn to play instead of a
toy to play with. They look fun and I
see them in Christmas movies."
Alexis A.
"I think Santa would play
with Barbie because I have a
lot of Barbies and they are
fun. He would like them a lot I
think "
Hayden D.
"I think Santa would play with
elf toys because he has all the
Elf on the Shelf elves in his home
when it's not Christmas time. He
plays with them all through the
