The Citizen, 2016-12-15, Page 21THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2016. PAGE 21. MacLellan wants `unwilling host' statement rescinded By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan wants council to reconsider its current status as an "unwilling host' to wind turbine developments. At council's Dec. 6 meeting, MacLellan served council with a notice of motion to be discussed at the next meeting regarding the unwilling host designation. The issue will then be discussed at council's Dec. 20 meeting in Seaforth. Council first passed a motion declaring the municipality an unwilling host to wind turbine developments on April 2, 2013. The wording "unwilling host" comes from Premier Kathleen Wynne's throne speech of February, 2013, when she stated that only municipalities that were "willing hosts" would be home to developments like gas plants, wind turbine developments and casinos. At the inaugural meeting of the current term of Huron East Council, held in December, 2014, MacLellan stated that he wanted council to reconsider a vibrancy fund that had been offered by St. Columban Wind Energy. The fund would have paid the municipality $115,000 per year for 20 years, resulting in a total investment over that time of $2.3 million. MacLellan said it would be inappropriate to discuss the issue at the Dec. 6 meeting, but that the issue should be discussed in full at the Dec. 20 meeting. MacLellan also told councillors that at the Dec. 20 meeting, he would give his full reasons for the motion, which will ask council to officially rescind the motion made in April, 2013. The Dec. 20 meeting of council is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Seaforth at the Huron East municipal office.
