Winter cuts hunting season short
PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

It looks like we are going to have
a white Christmas after all! The
good weather of early December
was certainly enjoyed, but now
reality has set in and Mother Nature
bestowed her wrath and a snowstorm
upon us. Driving was a challenge on
Thursday evening and Friday
depending where you went. Awaking
Saturday morning was quite a
surprise to find at least two feet of
snow and more in some places.
Snowblowing or shovelling was a
must to get anywhere.
The Winthrop ladies met this past
week to have a Christmas
celebration, not a birthday
celebration. They enjoyed a
breakfast at the Walton Inn and an
hour of catching up with each
others' Christmas preparations.
Enjoying the morning were Karen
Braecker, Yolanda Gubelmann,
Jennifer Vellenga, Judy Beuermann
and Jeanette Robinson.
We send get -well wishes to Donna
Fischer as she recovers from a
broken arm. She had a fall and the
result is six to eight weeks to heal.
We hope the time flies for her.
We send our wishes for a speedy
recovery to Alex Townsend. He is
home recovering from heart surgery
and is doing well. I am sure Eileen is
taking very good care of the patient.
We send our get -well wishes to
Ken Shortreed who is a patient in a
London Hospital. He suffered a very
serious fall and injured himself quite
badly. We hope he is able to make a
full recovery. Our thoughts are with
Ken and his family at this time.
The Walton Hall was to have two
Christmas rentals on the weekend
which were both cancelled due to the
inclement weather. It is great to have
the hall being used for get-togethers.
Reasonable rent, a fully -equipped
kitchen, stove, fridge and tables and
chairs. Everything you need for a
get-together.
Congratulations to Paul and
Carolyn Somerville on the birth of a
new granddaughter. Proud parents
are Scott and Andrea of Grande
Prairie, Alberta. They had a baby girl
on Dec. 10 and have named her
Reese Millie. Congrats to all.
'Tis the season of family
Christmas get-togethers as the Blake
family gathered this past weekend.
They met at the St. Ambrose Church
and the approximately 60 people
enjoyed a noon meal provided by
Cardiff catering. An afternoon of
visiting followed and a host of
Christmas wishes exchanged.
Our sympathies are expressed to
the Williamson family on the
passing of Helen Williamson. Helen
will be missed by her children
Wayne, Ilene, Eric and Lois and
their families. Helen had reached the
wonderous age of 96 and was a kind,
soft spoken and lovely lady. She was
always willing to help in some way
for the Duff's turkey supper and
made pies well into her 80s. She was
always smiling and a pleasure to
visit with. She has spent the last few
years at the Seaforth Manor. Our
sympathies to the Williamson
families.
The week of deer hunting was a
pretty good week and many of the
hunting crews did well. By week's
end and my latest information, the
McDonald/Blake crew had eight, the
Dalton gang had 12, the Fritz crew
had four, the Van Beek/ Wilson crew
had six, the Greidanus/Boven gang
18 and the Shortreed crew had six.
There are a few less deer around and
maybe the hunt was cut short by the
arrival of winter weather on Friday
and Saturday.
Those celebrating birthdays this
past week include Glenda Morrison.
John Glauser, MacKenzie Gulutzen,
Darian Fritz, Gary Ritchie, Brook
Beuermann, Evan Ducharme,
Cheryl Mader, Casey Boven,
Margaret Whitmore, Emma Taylor,
Bob Houston, Emma Baan and
Jackie Clarke. Happy birthday to
all.
Complicated severance directed to county FROM WALTON
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East Council has a
complicated severance on its desk
pertaining to Seaforth's Design
Concrete and some surrounding
municipal land.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight updated councillors on the
situation at their Dec. 6 meeting,
saying that the process began several
years ago, adding that it hasn't
progressed much further in the time
since.
The process began, Knight told
council, when the owners of Design
Concrete expressed interest in
purchasing a five -acre lot from the
Wilson farm next door.
Initial observations, Knight said,
were that the "roadway" that would
provide access to the newly -created
lot would not be considered up to
standard. If the roadway was to be
brought up to standard, Knight said,
it would be done so at the cost of the
proponent.
Upon further investigation,
however, Knight said that the
"roadway" was in fact not an official
road allowance at all, but rather
simply municipal land. Knight told
the proponents that in order to
establish the piece of land as a
roadway, a process would have to
take place.
Due to potential costs, Knight said
he suggested that extending Birch
Street, which runs near the current
business, would likely hold better
value and better development
potential.
After debate back and forth, in
September, 2016, the company's
lawyer returned with a new option,
suggesting that Design Concrete
could buy 23 acres of industrial land
abutting the current end of Birch
Street, leaving approximately 24
acres of land without any public
road access.
Mayor Bernie MacLellan said
there was some merit to the new
proposal, saying that the company
would be using the five -acre plot for
storage and that the Wilson family
would be granted access across the
property with the new owner's
consent.
Some councillors, however, felt
that might create a quirky condition
on a property that perhaps municipal
council and staff may live to regret
further down the road.
Councillors felt that since the
Dinner
North Woods Elementary School hosted its annual
Christmas lunch on Friday just before the dumping of snow
made Huron County look like a winter wonderland. Shown
waiting their turn to get lunch are, front to back, Tyler Van
Veen, Evan Cullen and Carson Keffer. (Denny Scott photo)
severance application hadn't yet
been officially made, they would
encourage the owners of Design
Concrete to formally file the
application and then it would be sent
to Huron County Council where a
decision would be made.
