Rev. Gary Clark lit the two Advent Candles during the singing of the first two verses of "So Near We Can Feel It." Emily Phillips joined Rev. Clark in a short skit about the third candle of Joy. The prayer of approach was said in unison followed by the singing of the third verse of "So Near We Can Feel It" Rev. Clark lit the candle of Joy. Rev. Clark invited everyone to greet one another. The carol "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" was sung. The scripture readings were from Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew 1:18-25, the story of the angels coming to Mary and Joseph telling of the birth of Jesus. The choir sang the anthem "The First Noel" and Pachelbel Canon in D. Rev. Clark's message to the congregation was "The Gift of Presence" The people of God were oppressed and needed a gift. This is the season that we need a gift, a perfect gift. We watched a short video of Sainsbury's Christmas advertisement of someone wanting to buy the right gift. The conclusion of the story was that the gift of one's self is the best gift. God wants us to simply be ourselves. There are four steps: 1) people just being present, we only turn to God when something goes wrong. We don't seek God in the beginning; 2) Perplexed: Mary is perplexed until the angel comes to her with an explanation. Often we are perplexed when we are called to do something; 3) We don't have the power. We don't think we have the power to do the task. God calls us because of our gift. We have to accept that we do have the power to do the task; 4) Just being us. Mary and Joseph knew that God had touched them. We need to be in the present. God needs people to be role models. (Thomas Watson, "The Doctrine of Repentance") "Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices!" Ezekiel 36:31 A true penitent is a sin -loather. If a man loathes that which makes his stomach sick, much more will he loathe that which makes his soul sick! It is greater to loathe sin—than to leave it. The nauseating and loathing of sin, argues a detestation of it. Christ is never loved — until sin is loathed. Heaven is never longed for — until sin is loathed. When the soul sees its filthiness, he cries out, "Lord, when shall I be freed from this body of death! When shall I put off these filthy garments of sin — and be arrayed in the robe of Your perfect righteousness! Let all my self-love be turned into self -loathing!" We are never more precious in God's eyes — than when we are lepers in our own eyes! The more bitterness we taste in sin — the more sweetness we shall taste in Christ!
