The Citizen, 2016-12-15, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2016. One popular guy Eric Ross might have been the most sought-after individual at the Brussels Legion Christmas mega meat draw on Saturday. He was in charge of delivering wings and french fries during the event. Behind him is Lisa Glanville, left, and Joan Smith who were almost as popular as they were selling/drawing the tickets for the meat draw. The countdown is on for the small set as they wait in anticipation for Dec. 25. It's hard not to get in the mood when kids buzz around with their sense of enthusiasm and wonder. Don't you just wish that adults would take a hint. We are in the time of hope, peace, joy and love so happily demonstrated by the children. Adults so often get hooked on buying and getting, competing and receiving, so listen and learn from the children and you'll have a better Christmas time. Traditions are events that happen regularly, cultural continuity by the dictionary. For some, certain things must happen in a certain way at a certain time or things are just not right. Thats fine as long as everyone involved appreciates the tradition and the reason for it. Things like attending Christmas Eve worship with family and friends is a tradition for many with the obvious reason of the season. New pyjamas or hot chocolate on Dec. 24 is another one. Christmas Eve suppers, brunches or dinner on Dec. 25, for some are set Hummel wins mega meat draw By Jo -Ann McDonald The Thursday night darts had a good bunch of darters out to play. Winners were: first, Lawrence Machan and Sandra Josling; second, John and Sheron Stadelmann; high shot, Sandra, 105 and Lawrence, 101. The weekend was very busy at the Brussels Legion Branch with five functions planned and only one being cancelled. The first was euchre. The stormy weather on Saturday kept many of the euchre players away, but a dozen braved the roads to come. They had a good afternoon with adjustments made to the prizes. Winners were: first, Norm and Hellen Dobson, 72; second, Betty and Edna McLellan, 64; third, Betty and Frank Hulley, 63; lone hands, Paul Machan and Barb White, seven and low, Hazel and Faye, 51. Comrade Glenn Bridge looked after the smaller crowd. The men's Huron County Dart League held its day of play at the Branch on Saturday. Most had full teams with just a few missing due to weather. Comrade Deb Ross and Jo- Ann McDonald looked after the afternoon darts. The Christmas mega meat draw was held starting at 5 p.m. Saturday night. There was a good bunch of people on hand to take home the winnings. There were multiple winners including Barry O'Krafta, Joan Beuermann and Liz Wright and others taking home turkeys, hams, shrimp, beef and more, including Sharon Rapson, Betty McCallum, Brad Beuermann, Joan Smith, Norm Dobson, Linda Taylor, Fred Cousins, Daisy Wong -Schmidt, Jo -Ann McDonald, Jacquie Waechter, Jeanette Monahan, Alley Beuermann, Larry Rock and Lloyd Glanville. The happiest of all was BJ Hummel with the mega win. The time is not important in this house, the attendance is, so we do a survey of the work hours scheduled, find a date and then truly appreciate the gathering of family, hopefully during the 12 days of Christmas. One of our traditions is a December supper meeting with Jim and Pat Castator; now in its 16th year. Jim is Joan Jacobs' brother and knowing how important brothers are, we are the taxi to a nice restaurant where chat, laughter, stories and food make for an enjoyable evening. Drayton's Chop Shop was this year's site where service and great food insured that this tradition will happen next year. For many the traditional Community Choir Choral Concert is part of their preparation of the season. Mother Nature had other plans this year and blew in lots of snow on Sunday. A disappointment for many, especially the choirs who had practised for the evening. This is Huron County winter, so sometimes we just need to stay at home for safety's sake. If you're in carol withdrawal, plan to attend the United Church on Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. and sing your wee heart out. Enjoy this Christmas time. Remember cough into your sleeve and wash your hands often.
