Cowbell leading poll as Ontario's best new brewery
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Cowbell Brewing Company is
leading the way in a poll hosted by
the Ontario Beverage Network
looking to highlight the province's
best new brewery in 2016.
The poll, which is asking people to
identify their favourite new Ontario
brewing company of 2016, opened
earlier this month and runs until
Dec. 31. Currently, Blyth Cowbell
Brewing Company is leading the
poll with 16 per cent of the
approximately 2,500 voters.
Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company
officially unveiled its plans to build a
brewery at its Home Opener in
February at the Blyth Emergency
Services Training Centre and
unveiled Absent Landlord, its first
brew, at the company's first batch
party at the Blyth Community
Centre in May.
Absent Landlord, the first in the
Founder's Series of beers from the
company, sold better than the
company could have anticipated
with local LCBO and LCBO
partners selling out within the first
day the drink was launched.
The Founder's Series focuses on
people integral to Blyth's history.
Absent Landlord is inspired by
Henry Blyth, who bought the village
of Blyth and renamed it, but never
visited his owned namesake.
The second in the Founder's
Series, Doc Perdue's Bobcat, was
launched in October and was
inspired by Doc Perdue, a local
veterinarian known for his love of
exotic animals including one bobcat.
The brew should be available in
cans at LCBO locations sometime
this month.
The company also has a line of
small batch beers called the
Renegade Series which is available
only in select restaurants and pubs
for limited periods.
Cowbell has been employing
contract brewing for its various
beverages since launching in the
summer as the brewery is being built
at the corners of County Roads 4 and
25. Recently, the building began to
take shape with outer walls and a
roof going on most of the structure.
After completion of the building,
brewing will be done at the site,
which will include a restaurant,
brewery and a farm on both sides of
County Road 4 which will provide
some of the ingredients used in the
beer.
The Ontario Beverage Network
and the poll can be found at
www.momandhops.ca. The site
focuses on locally -owned and
artisanal beverage producers
throughout Ontario and, until last
year at this time, was known as the
Ontario Beer Network.
Half Hours on Earth Brewery,
from Seaforth, is also high up on the
list of nearly 50 brewing companies
holding the 11th spot with two per
cent of the vote.
