Silver Stick tournaments hosted in Blyth, Wingham
Down, but not out
A player from West Grey may have found his way past the Blyth Brussels Atom Crusaders'
goalie during a Silver Stick round robin game in Blyth on Saturday, but Blyth Brussels gave as
good as it got and the match ended in a 3-3 tie. Unfortunately, the tie knocked the team out
of contention for the finals. The tournament was one of two Silver Stick championships held in
Wingham and Blyth community centres over the past few weeks. (Vicky Bremner photo)

The Blyth and Wingham
community centres played host to
two local Silver Stick competitions
over the past several weeks.
The Midget and Atom Silver Stick
tournaments were hosted by
Wingham with the help of the Blyth
arena, marking the 31st year
Wingham has been a part of the
Silver Stick tradition.
Starting in late November and
running to last weekend, the Blyth
and District Community Centre and
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex in Wingham
hosted the Atom Silver Stick
competition which saw South Bruce
win the Atom 'C' division
tournament and Hanover bring home
the gold in the 'B' division.
The tournament was split into
three round robins with the 'C'
division split and the 'B' division on
its own.
South Bruce posted the 4-3 win
over the TCDMHA club on Sunday
in Wingham while Hanover posted a
Victory
The Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association PeeWee Rep Crusaders sent the Arthur Vipers
slithering home after the Crusaders managed an 8-1 victory at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre last week. The squad will travel to Arthur on Dec. 9 to hopefully score
another win. (Denny Scott photo)
2-1 win over Saugeen Shores, also
on Sunday in Wingham.
Games were played in Blyth
and Wingham on Saturday with
earlier games all being played
in Wingham.
Locally, the Blyth -Brussels Minor
Hockey Association Crusaders were
in Atom 'C' division three. The
Crusaders posted a win against
Dundalk on Nov. 27 in Wingham, a
3-2 loss to Minto in Blyth on
Saturday morning and a 3-3 tie,
again on Saturday in Blyth against
West Grey. Unfortunately, the team's
1-1-1 record wasn't enough to break
into the finals of the tournament.
Last month the Midget Silver
Stick was hosted in Blyth and
Wingham and saw Minto best
Shelburne 4-1 in the Midget 'C'
Division final and Kincardine post a
2-1 win over Ayr in the Midget 'B'
Division finals.
Games were hosted in Wingham
throughout the week with several
games hosted in Blyth on Saturday.
The Blyth -Brussels Crusaders
didn't participate in the tournament.
Jason Goodall, who organized
both tournaments, said the two
events went well.
"The hockey was very good," he
said. "The tournaments were very
successful."
The only problem, according to
Goodall, was that amalgamations
and dwindling numbers in some
centres led to three teams dropping
out of each division.
"It's difficult when you lose that
many teams," he said, pointing to the
fact that the divisions each had
slightly more than 20 teams to begin
with.
Proceeds from the tournament are
donated to Wingham Minor Hockey
and Goodall said the tournament
wouldn't happen, and those
proceeds wouldn't be generated,
without the generosity of the
tournament's sponsors.
Consolation champions
The Blyth and District Community Centre served as a
second venue for the Atom and Midget Silver Stick
tournaments over the past several weeks. Above, the
Seaforth Atom squad played in Blyth on Saturday against
Georgian Shores earning a 6-3 win. Seaforth would then go
on to win the consolation championship, edging out Minto
7-6. (Vicky Bremner photo)
