Area choirs gather for Christmas show in Brussels A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 At the Branch Ah, the season has arrived. Once the calendar gets flipped to December, dinners, events, church traditions, parties, concerts and choirs fill in the dates of this fun month. It is natural to want to be with folks of like interests, so a little planning is required, so that the joy of the season remains well above the frustration level. The Advent route of this season shows "Hope" as the first offering for December. For many, indicated by the high drug, alcohol and suicide rate in our country, we need to offer hope regularly to those in our midst. That is not easy but we can be aware of unfairness in our community and speak to others with the purpose of trying to bring hope to another. Peace is something we all work towards. Peace of mind for many is a challenge and with understanding of the uniqueness of each one of us, we Christmas craft show hosted Celebrities Maybe the Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador Patti Blake isn't quite as well known as Santa Claus worldwide, but they both are well known in Brussels. The pair were at the Christmas craft show hosted by the Brussels Legion Branch on Sunday. (Vicky Bremner photo) The early bird membership drive is now over and the November winner was Monica Richardson. She joins Peter Grey and Deb Cann as winners of their 2018 dues. The Branch will always welcome new members to join. You do not need any veteran affiliation to become a member of the largest service organization in Canada. The Brussels Legion membership stands at about 110, with many living out of town or unable to assist the Branch with many of its activities. We have many committed volunteers but will always welcome more with the increased usage of the building. Drop into the Branch and pick up a membership application from the bar and join the Royal Canadian Legion of Brussels. The Thursday night darts results for the last two weeks have had a consistent number of darters coming out. The group would welcome more to come and have a night of fun for just $1. No experience is necessary, just enjoy a night of fun. The last night of November, the first place team was Wayne Smith and Marlene Rutledge. Second place was Penny Reynolds and Gord Jacklin with Gord shooting the high shot of 115 for the men. Sandra Josling hit 105 for the ladies. On the first night of December, the 13 darters had a great night of fun. The first -place team was the trio of Deb Burch, Wayne Smith and Ron Schmidt. The second -place team was Sheron Stadelmann and Marc Barbour. The high shots were by Ron hitting 140 and Daisy Wong hitting 134. Darts are Thursday nights at 8 p.m. Darts are available for use. We are continuing our fundraising activities with a Christmas mega meat draw this Saturday. There will also be wings, fries and other snack food available. The Legion needs to continue to support many charitable donations, as well as ongoing building expenses and more upgrades are in the planning stages. Come out and enjoy an evening of fun, food and maybe go home with some prizes. Sunday, the Branch was the venue for a Christmas craft show hosted by two ladies. They had a variety of home entrepeneurs displaying many unique and interesting items for sale. No one said the road to Christmas is easy, it's time to think about your role in the world and your influence in the scheme of things. Joy is for week number three. It sounds easy and if we could all keep the child in us, joy would be spontaneous and frequent. As adults we often think too much. Joy gets stifled in the thinking and we lose the pure joy in the moment. Love is next. To give away love you need full doses of hope, peace and joy. In order to give love we first need to love ourselves. Each person is loved and sometimes we need to tell them just that, confidence in one's self and knowing your worth is probably the best gift ever. We have so many to show love with our presence, our support and our kind words. It seems it's easier at Christmas. Many situations come to light that could use just a little more help and so we give our time, our talents and our money showing that we love the world around us. So next Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian church the Brussels Minsterial is offering you a time for all. The area choirs will help you get the spirit of the season. Come enjoy the music. Family Christmases have begun. The larger the family, the more planning it takes, seven when some of them irritate you, they're family and they are the ones who know you best. Think Christmas and have a good time. Take time to know yourself and then be generous to the causes you support. Happy Advent.
