The Citizen, 2016-11-03, Page 25THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2016. PAGE 25. Morris-Turnberry discusses event remuneration The debate over whether or not a council member should be paid for attending social events on behalf of committees was laid to rest at Morris-Turnberry's Oct. 18 council meeting. Originally brought up at the Oct. 4 meeting, some councillors felt that council members attending events such as parades and fairs should not be compensated for such events as they are social events and not meetings, while others felt any time a councillor is called upon to provide remarks or be a part of a ceremony they should be paid. Administrator Clerk -Treasurer Nancy Michie explained that council had adopted a policy regarding members being eligible for remuneration for social events, but it had never been made part of the remuneration bylaw. Michie pointed out that council could decide which events members could be paid for on a case-by-case basis if necessary, though others felt the wording the policy covered those eventualities. Council eventually carried a motion that would see the 2017 remuneration bylaw include wording for all meetings in conjunction with local boards, so if a councillor is attending an event on behalf of one of the many committees that Morris- Turnberry has representation on, they would be eligible for remuneration. As far as attending events on behalf of the municipality, Councillor Sharen Zinn, whose request for remuneration for attending the Belgrave Elementary School Fair on behalf of the county's farm safety organization, said council already deals with those requests. Zinn explained that requests for a representative are handled at the council table, so council is already aware of who is attending on their behalf. BUY? SELL?
