Fare on 4 cut for 2017 due to number of local events
One big meal
Fare on 4 brought 1,419 people to Blyth's main street to dine and raise funds for Blyth Arts
and Cultural Initiative 14/19 Inc., a program designed to renovate Memorial Hall and create
rural -focused artistic programming in Blyth over a five-year period from 2014-2019. The event
was set to be held again in 2017, however the number of events happening next year has
dissuaded organizers from attempting to hold it as to not take volunteers from other projects.
The event will be held before the end of 2019 according to organizers. (Fite photo)

Bacon, 43; and lone hands, John and

two weeks.
The second event for the day was
the Huron County Men's Dart
League. They began play after 1
p.m. and finished up by 4:30 p.m. It
was a nice afternoon of competitive
team play.
Immediately following the dart
league, the evening of meat draws
and wings and fries was organized.
The crew had the fryers readied to
go, kitchen staff prepared, ticket
sellers and prizes sorted and the
event started. Comrade Andy
Overholt did a great job organizing
the gang for a great evening. There
was crowd of about 40 people
enjoying the wings and draws. The
happy winners of the evening
included Janet Haertel, Lloyd and
Mabel Glanville, Ron Schmidt, Jean
Davidson, Cindy and Grant Jarvis,
Doug Koch, Peter Gray, Joan Smith,
Jane Rock and Deb Seili. With just a
small crowd many were multiple
winners, so went home very happy!
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd enjoying the music of
the Country Versatiles Band. Nearly
100 people had a good time dancing
and enjoying the lunch. Dances are
every two weeks.
It is that time of year again when
the preparations for the Poppy
canvas and Remembrance Day
service are being organized. The
2016 Poppy Campaign year will
start on Oct. 28 when the Poppy
boxes will be placed in the stores
and the wearing of the Poppy can
begin. The wearing of the Poppy is
to show respect for those who served
our country, in any armed conflict,
and gave their lives for their country.
The official Poppy campaign always
begins the second Friday before
Remembrance Day and ends at the
end of the day on Nov. 11, when the
Poppy shall be laid to rest, in honour
of the fallen servicemen. The Poppy
is to be worn on the left lapel, close
to the heart, to recognize the love
and respect for our fallen and
wounded soldiers. Please respect the
traditions of Remembrance and wear
the Poppy with pride and encourage
those around you to do the same.
Remembrance Day services are
also being planned and Poppy
Chairman Sandra Josling is
organizing the wreaths, that are
placed in memory of family and
community groups. If anyone wishes
to purchase and place a wreath in
memory of a loved one, is asked to
contact Comrade Sandra at the
Legion at 519-887-6562.

Fare on 4, the now famous event
that turned Blyth's main street into a
dining room for 1,419 has been
removed from the 2017 schedule of
events for organizer Blyth Arts and
Cultural Initiative 14/19.
When asked, organizers said there
were many events occurring in 2017
due to the 140th anniversary of the
Village of Blyth, the East Wawanosh
150th anniversary, the 2017
International Plowing Match in
Walton and the 150th anniversary of
Canada. Due to the number of
events, organizers felt that it would
be difficult to host the dinner.
Originally held in 2014, the dinner
was sold out and served as a great
launch platform for 14/19, which
has since created the Canadian
Centre for Rural Creativity at the
site of the former Blyth Public
School and funded renovations for
Memorial Hall in Blyth that started
earlier this year.
Peter Gusso of Part II Bistro, who,
alongside fellow Chef Jason
Rutledge of the Blyth Inn, planned
and served the original Fare on 4,
said he understands the reason for
the cancellation, but is going to miss
the opportunity to be a part of the
event again.
"It's good on the organizers' part
to postpone due to the number of
events next year," he said. "We don't
want to be taking volunteer or
participants from competing events.
That said, I loved it and I'm
definitely looking forward to when
they hope to host it again."
Karen Stewart, 14/19
Administrator, said the group plans
to hold the meal at least once more
before the end of the five-year
initiative in 2019.
