Seat sale offers chance to leave mark on new theatre
The best seat in the house: yours
The Blyth Festival is giving people the opportunity to put
their name on the seats that are being installed in Memorial
Hall's upper hall as part of the renovations to the century -
old building. So far, approximately one-quarter of the seats
have been sold to individuals and families looking to make
their mark or dedicate seats in memoriam. (Photo submitted)

Those wanting to make their mark
on the community of Blyth and
support Blyth Memorial Community
Hall have found their match in the
Blyth Festival Seat Sale.
Memorial Hall is currently
undergoing extensive renovations
through the efforts of Blyth Arts and
Cultural Initiative 14/19 Inc. and the
renovation committee. As part of
those renovations, the seats in the
upper hall of the building, which
serves as the home for the Blyth
Festival's main stage production, are
being replaced.
For the first time since its
inception, the theatre's main floor
will have brand new seats. The seats
in the balcony, which were new to
the hall when they were installed, are
also being replaced.
To help with capital expenses
related to the renovation, the Blyth
Festival is selling the right to have a
three-inch by two-inch engraved
plaque on each of the nearly -400
seats in the theatre at $500 per seat.
While the Blyth Festival's board
and staff will be reaching out to
those they feel will be interested in
the project, General Manager Deb
Sholdice said the sale is for the
entire community, not just those who
attend Festival shows.
"We want to reach out to the
community at large and let them
know about this," she said.
While the theatre is used primarily
for shows for the Blyth Festival, it is
also used by the community at large
for special events such as dance
competitions or musical shows and it
is also home to annual community
events like the Remembrance Day
ceremony.
Each plaque will be on the arm of
the chair and Sholdice said that
approximately one-quarter of the
seats have been sold. The sale will
continue as late as possible
according to Sholdice, who said the
cut-off could be as early as
November, however she hopes to
reach into December.
"We have to have the plaques
ordered in time to have them
installed on the chairs when they are
ready to go into the hall," she said.
The price tag is a reasonable one,
Sholdice said, compared to similar
fundraisers. She said the emphasis is
as much on raising the funds as it is
on community representation in the
building.
She said that, further to that end,
payment plans are available for
people who may not have $500 to
give immediately. Tax receipts are
also available as the donation is
completely deductible.
"We can be flexible," she said.
"We can arrange payment options."
As for the plaques, Sholdice said
there is more than enough space for
memorials and names, though
it's recommended that the
messages are at most three
lines long.
So far, the orders that have come
in are personal in nature, including
memorial and family donations,
though groups and businesses are
more than welcome, Sholdice said.

Pup Patrol fundraiser set to help out Ag. Society
To help offset the added expenses
of holding the Brussels Fall Fair at
next year's International Plowing
Match in Walton, the Brussels
Agricultural Society is hosting a
fundraiser for kids on Oct. 1.
Organizer Nicole Noble, who has
been a member of the society for
years, brainstormed a Pup Patrol
dance party and meet -and -greet for
kids that stirs thoughts of a popular
children's T.V. show.
Noble says she and her family
were at the Mildmay Fall Fair and a
similar event was held there. It was
sold out and looked to be one of the
busiest locations at the fair and she
thought that such an event would
translate well to the Brussels
community.
The event is set for Saturday, Oct.
Kicking off the big celebration
The Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre was a hot spot for the village over the past
week as, on Sept. 20-21 the Brussels Fall Fair filled the grounds and, on Sunday, the kick-off
for the 2017 International Plowing Match was held. The match, which will be held just outside
of Walton, was welcomed with a parade and musical acts including the Sills family from
