From the Minister's Study
Without a Shepherd, there is no hope: Royall
By Rev. Mark Royall
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church, Auburn
The Pharisees and religious
leaders were muttering because
Jesus was teaching and hanging out
with sinners.
"So Jesus told them this story: `If
a man has a hundred sheep and one
of them gets lost, what will he do?
Won't he leave the ninety-nine
others in the wilderness and go to
search for the one that is lost until he
finds it? And when he has found it,
he will joyfully carry it home on his
shoulders."' (Luke 15:3-6)
Jesus describes Himself as the
Great Shepherd and we as His sheep.
Majestic
WI hosts
meeting
The Majestic WI members and
guests met at the home of Marie
McCutcheon on Sept. 14.
The meeting opened with singing
the Institute Ode and repeating the
Mary Stewart Collect. President
Yvonne Knight welcomed everyone
and read "A Day Worth While".
The minutes of the last meeting
and correspondence were read by
Edna Pletch.
Marie McCutcheon introduced
the guest speakers Donna Bauer and
Jean Dunn who are community food
advisors. They demonstrated
making "Quick Chili" using "Quick
Spaghetti Sauce". They gave recipes
for other uses with the "Quick
Spaghetti Sauce". The members
sampled the chili, jams and biscuits
made with herbs added. Marie
McCutcheon thanked the speakers.
Kathy Bridge distributed the
newsletters which also included the
reports from the treasurer, coins for
friendship and sunshine convenors.
Yvonne Knight read some smiles
about children and school.
The roll call was answered by
telling one change you could make
to improve your eating habits. Plans
were made for the October meeting.
Bev Craddock and Yvonne Knight
served fruit and cheese with Marie
McCutcheon's tea and coffee.
The winners of the draw for the
quilt, basket of goodies and the gift
card drawn at the Brussels Fair
were: first, John Young, Wellesley;

getlivingwater.org,
As sheep we can muster up these
warm fuzzy images of ourselves as
cuddly little sheep prancing through
green pastures on a sunny day while
Jesus our Great Shepherd is close by
looking on with a content smile.
But when we come to know what
this parable meant to its original
audience, we will understand being
compared to sheep is no
compliment. In fact, people in the
day would have considered the
comparison to sheep as an insult.
Pastor and author Tim Keller tells
us why. He speaks about a man who
spent his life caring for sheep, and
then later became a pastor. This
shepherd turned pastor says, "A
sheep is a stupid animal. It loses its
direction constantly in a way that a
cat or dog never does. And even
when you find the lost sheep it goes
to and fro and will not follow you
home. So when you find it, you must
seize it, throw it down, tie it, throw it
over your shoulders and carry it
home. That's the only way to find a
lost sheep"

Like sheep, we need to be rescued.
We constantly need to be rescued.
When sheep see grass they want it.
It doesn't matter where it is, how
steep or dangerous the terrain may
be, they try and get to it. The sheep
sees some fresh grass down on a cliff
and they go for it. Once there, they
start munching away, enjoying what
they have found but, then suddenly
when lunch is gone, they realize they
are stuck. They are in danger. They
can't get back out. When the sheep
is stranded out on a cliff it has two
choices: it either has to be rescued or
fall to its death.
Jesus is telling us something about
ourselves. He is saying, that's us. We
are like sheep. Earlier in the Bible
we read in Isaiah 53:6, "All of us,
like sheep, have strayed away. We
have left God's paths to follow our
own" This is me. This is you. We are
like sheep. We follow our own paths,
our own opinions, our own ideas of
what is good for us but then we
become lost, we are stuck and in
danger. When the grass is gone,

when it fails you and it is no longer
able to fill you, you become empty
and begin to see how stupid this
whole endeavour was.
Like sheep we think we can save
ourselves but here is another fact
about sheep: A sheep can contribute
nothing to its salvation.
This means that you and I... we
are utterly lost and can't do anything
to save ourselves. It's not enough for
us just to see Jesus as a good teacher.
It is not enough for us to just try and
follow His example in life. We need
Him to rescue us and then we need
to stay close to Him, trust Him and
obey Him. We need a Saviour who
has done everything in the rescuing
process...who lives the life we
should have lived, died the death we
should have died.
Without a Shepherd we've got no
hope and yet many procrastinate or
they are too stubborn to admit they
need to be rescued and like many
sheep, they fall to their eternal death.
