Cowbell, Scrimgeour's partner for `Bobcat' launch Building North America's Coming along With plenty of good weather, the team working at the future site of Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company has had ideal conditions to begin construction on the building. The silo has been the latest addition to the site. (Denny Scott photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen After the successful launch of Absent Landlord, Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company's flagship beer, the brewery is partnering with Scrimgeour's Food Market to mark the launch of its second offering: Doc Perdue's Bobcat. The North Huron municipal parking lot, located in front of Scrimgeour's Food Market, will be fenced off on Oct. 1 for the launch event which is set to run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Samples of Doc Perdue's Bobcat will be served alongside Scrimgeour's sausage, hand-crafted by Scrimgeour patriarch Don Scrimgeour. "We really enjoy the sausages that Don makes," Cowbell Vice - President Grant Sparling said. "We found that it paired really well with Doc Perdue's Bobcat and we wanted to support other local businesses and work together." Brent, Don's son, explained that the family and staff at Scrimgeour's are excited to be a part of the event. "I thought right away that it was a good pairing," he said. "Whether it's propane or beer, the Sparling and Scrimgeour families have always had the same end goal of a successful Blyth and this event will look towards that." Scrimgeour's sausages are bought and sought after by visitors from all over, including London, Kitchener, Waterloo and even as far away as Vancouver according to Don, so it makes sense the meat would be paired with the new beer. "The event will also mark the History With the help of local historians Brock and Janis Vodden, Grant Sparling and the Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company team have injected their products with a shot of local history. First it was the "Absent Landlord" Henry Blyth and now it's Doc Perdue, left. Perdue is seen here with John Watson, the father of Edward, at the Blyth Fairgrounds in an undated picture. (Photo submitted) kickoff for the Blyth 140th celebration which will take place all of next year," says Cowbell's Genny Smith. "We wanted the event to be interactive and fun." Smith said there will also be the chance for people to go to local shops and restaurants after the event was over. The Township of North Huron is behind the event as well, according to Smith, who said that, on top of allowing the event to occur in the municipal parking lot, also donated the fencing for it. The Blyth Lions are also involved, having donated 20 picnic tables for the event. As for the beer, it is the second in the Founders' Series after Absent Landlord. "The series is meant to be approachable and drinkable," Sparling said. "This beer will have medium bitterness and high hop flavour and aroma and we're making it with a specialty malt that will give it a unique ruby red colour without altering the crisp, American Pale Ale flavour and aroma" The brew is named after a veterinarian in Blyth in the 19th century who was known around town for a few very specific reasons. "Perdue is a very interesting character," Sparling said. "He collected exotic animals and liked to drink." Sparling said one story about Perdue led to the naming of the beer. The veterinarian had been cut off at the local bar but really wanted another drink. He went home and returned with a leashed bobcat he threatened to let loose in the bar if he didn't get another drink. The company aims to have the beer available in local establishments in kegs within two weeks with canned releases to follow in the coming months. After Doc Perdue's Bobcat, Sparling explained the company will be looking at starting its Renegade Series. The series will feature small batch, keg -only beers with unique and interesting styles, Sparling said. "There will be a different beer each month available at restaurants," he said. "The beers will typically be higher in alcohol and flavour and be more bold and courages. The series allows Cowbell to demonstrate the kinds of complex brews we will be releasing in the future and it allows Brewmaster Stephen Rich to demonstrate his creativity." Sparling said the company is working with 20 to 30 establishments both locally and in the London, Kitchener, Waterloo and Toronto areas. BUY? SELL?
