PEOPLE AROUND
BELGRAVE
One active family
The Fear family was recognized at the Huron County Plowing Match awards banquet at the
Belgrave Community Centre on Aug. 19 for their part in making the event happen. The family
provided their Clegg Line farm as grounds for both the plowing match and the Queen and
Princess competitions. From left: Huron County Plowmen's Association President Neil

M -T debates truck purchase
A report regarding the purchase of
a new pickup truck and how it fit into
the shared services agreement with
North Huron caused some debate
during a recent Morris-Turnberry
Council meeting.
During the Aug. 2 meeting a report
was presented by Jeff Molenhuis, the
Director of Public Works for both
municipalities, in which he
suggested a pickup truck with a
larger cab be purchased to make
travelling to work sites with more
employees feasible.
Molenhuis, in his review of the
existing fleet for Morris-Turnberry,
noticed that many of the vehicles
have single bench -seat trucks that
will carry one to three employees,
and wanted to purchase an extended
cab truck to carry more staff to job
sites.
Along with the report,
Administrator Clerk -Treasurer
Nancy Michie also explained that
Molenhuis wanted to set up a
strategy to better predict when
vehicles will need to be replaced.
Some council members were first
concerned with the cost of a larger
truck, though both Mayor Paul
Gowing and Deputy -Mayor Jamie
Heller said that trucks with a single
row of seats like those the
municipality now uses, are actually
more rare than their extended cab
counterparts. Heffer said that non -
extended cab trucks may actually
need to be specially ordered and that
the price difference would be
negligible.
Councillor Dorothy Kelly said, if
the truck was within what was
budgeted for a replacement vehicle,
she had no problem with it, however,
she felt that some of the cost should
be covered by North Huron.
Kelly's comments came after
Councillor Johm Smuck said he
didn't see the need for more people
to be at a job site as the staff
delivered to job sites can usually
handle it with the existing fleet. It
was pointed out to Smuck, however,
that, with the shared services
agreement, there are more resources
available for projects.
In response to Kelly's suggestion
that North Huron cover the cost,
Gowing pointed out that the shared
services agreement is in a trial
period now, and that both
municipalities should buy the
equipment they need to make sure
they have it at the end of the trial
period.
Councillor Jim Nelemans said he
was fine with the increased cab size,
noting that fitting three people of a
similar size in a single row of seats
in a truck to him is tough enough
without having to consider cold
weather apparel.
He also said that, with an extended
cab, equipment can be kept inside
the vehicle instead of in the truck of
a bed which can keep expensive
tools and equipment out of the
elements.
Molenhuis was at a North Huron
Township Council meeting that same
night and couldn't speak directly to
the issues raised, however, in the
end, the discussion proved fruitless
as council decided that, if the
purchase was within the budget, it
was best to defer to the expertise of
the staff they had hired to make these
decisions.
"I think it's fine and we should just
wait until the figures come back,"
Heffer said. "As far as costing
anything out to North Huron, when
you buy equipment, shared service
gets reconciled through usage, not
purchase, and we still need to own
our own assets."
Runner up
Natalie Fear's family was busy this year at the Huron
County Plowing Match on Aug. 18 and 19. Not only did the
Fear family host the event, but each of the four children in
the family participated in the event. Natalie is shown above
plowing as part of her bid for the Queen of the Furrow
crown and sash. She finished second place in the
competition. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

On Sunday, Aug. 21 there was a
special summer service held at Ken
and Lila's pond for Knox United
Church with the minister Brian
Hymers officiating.
Worshippers gathered together in
the midst of God's beauty and glory.
Brian lit the Christ Candle as a
reminder that God is always with us.
We feel You in the breeze and You
touch us with each drop of rain. God
protects us in the silence and
darkness of night. We worship a
God that allows us to spread the
good news, young and old,
experienced or discovering one's
faith, you are so supportive of our
journey.
The opening hymn was "The
Church is Wherever" and the
children's hymn was, "Jesus Bids
Us Shine".
We listened to the Word of God
from scripture lessons Jeremiah 1:
4-10 and Luke 13: 10-17.
The hymn of response was "I
Love to Tell the Story".
The closing hymn was, "Open My
Eyes, That I May See". The
benediction and blessing, "Go Now
in Peace" concluded the morning
worship service.
After the service sausage and hot
dogs were cooked in the fire pit and
dessert was supplied by the ladies. It
was a unique place for the service as
well as fellowship and lunch.
