Walton Raceway, TSN sign television deal
Covering the action
As part of a recent deal penned with The Sports Network
(TSN), Walton Raceway will soon be producing two
television shows. One covering the Canadian Motocross
Amateur Grand National Championship from Aug. 17 to 20
and one covering the Canadian Motocross Grand National
Pro Open that is held Aug. 21. (File photo)
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Walton Raceway has decided to
make its television presence its own
by self -producing shows around its
biggest events that will air on The
Sports Network (TSN).
The raceway's management
recently announced the change,
stating that, while the raceway's
biggest event, the Parts Canada
TransCan Canadian Grand National
Championship Motocross was
usually televised as part of the
TransCan series, the organization
would be taking on the responsibility
of producing a televised version of
that race and other events itself.
The announcement stated that two
30 -minute programs, one focusing
on the Canadian Motocross Amateur
Grand National Championship from
Aug. 17-20 and one on the Canadian
Motocross Grand National Pro Open
that is held Aug. 21, will be aired a
minimum of five times on the
station.
Brett Lee, the President and
General Manager of the
organization, said the news
represents an important move for the
company.
"It's kind of a new step for us
because we're doing our own
television production," he said.
"We've been working on this for the
past six months with TSN. It's pretty
significant and a big market to hit."
Lee said that TSN is a great
partner for the TransCan as the brand
is recognizable and will pair well
with his company.
"You can get on television, on any
station really," he said. "But to get
on TSN and hang that shingle on
your business, there is
some recognition and credibility
there."
By producing their own shows,
Lee said that the company will have
more control over what is featured.
"This way, we're only limited by
our own creativity and ambition," he
said. "It gives us another hand in
promoting the event."
The amateur show is a great
example of that Lee said.
"The amateur races have never
been done before," he said. "We've
got that, and the ability to promote it
alongside the professional
component so it will really help to
show all that we have here"
Lee said the opportunity to
produce its own television programs
will allow the company to strengthen
its brand independently and there
will be few, if any, changes as a
result of the partnership.
"For the most part, there will be no
visible changes at the raceway," he
said. "Mostly, it's just a different
platform for people to see the races
and us."
Lee said that having that dedicated
platform played strongly into the
decision.
"The focus for us is the events," he
said. "We want to bring more focus
to Walton and the TransCan and start
promoting our brand and our area.
That's what we like about the deal,
doing our own thing, our own
production and working towards our
own goal."
While some details of the
agreement are yet to be hammered
out, Lee made the announcement so
that people are aware that the races
will be televised by the Walton
Raceway.
"This won't really affect our
spectators," he said. "They're at the
site for the experience of being there.
However, for people who can't be
there, they have this option which
will highlight us as well as the area
around us."

The ball stops here
Whether it's ice hockey or ball hockey, the goalie is always the last line of defense against the
onslaught of the opposing team. That point was proven time and again at a ball hockey
tournament that was held Saturday at the Belgrave Community Centre. (Vicky Bremner photo)
