Over 300 attend East Wawanosh's 150th lick -off event
What a kick-off!
One year ahead of the East Wawanosh 150th anniversary celebration scheduled for 2017, the
committee officially kicked off the countdown on Canada Day weekend with a special event at
the Belgrave Community Centre. The Belgrave Kinsmen provided a roast beef dinner to over
300 diners, nearly selling out and over $13,000 was raised for the event thanks to the silent
and live auctions. Here, auctioneer Dave McCormick, centre, who volunteered his services for
the night, was doing his best to bring money in for the cause, with the help of Ray Hallahan,
left, and Katie Cottrill. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

The 2017 East Wawanosh 150th
reunion is off to a good start with the
event's kick-off, which was held
over the weekend, in the books.
Committee chair Jamie McCallum
said the event brought out the
numbers that the group was hoping
for, and the amount of money raised
to help finance the event went well
beyond expectations.
"Participation was about what we
expected in the 300 range," he said.
"We served about 310 meals at the
dinner and we don't have an official
number for the BX93 dance party
but it was about the same crowd."
Financially, McCallum said that
just under $13,000 was raised over
the course of the night which
exceeded the group's goal.
"The auction was a resounding
success," he said. "There were a lot
of funds raised and a lot of people
went home with a lot of new items to
enjoy."
McCallum said the committee is
hoping for an even bigger crowd for
the actual event which is set for the
same weekend, the Canada Day
long weekend of June 30 to July 2,
in 2017.
"This was just the kick-off and,
with that many people, we're
expecting more people out for the
main event," he said. "It's good to
see the community taking part in it."
The committee is hoping to have
other events over the course of the
next year to make sure people stay
connected to the reunion.
"We don't have anything set in
stone right now," McCallum said.
"We have some events in the
planning stage, however."
The group is also looking to do a
kick-off for the history book. That

The changeover marks the first

whether the new management will

OUR BEAUTIFUL SONS:
REMEMBERING MATTHEW DINNING
Written by Christopher Morris 1 Directed by Gil Garratt
In 2006, young local Wingham man, Matthew Dinning, gave the ultimate
sacrifice in Afghanistan. A year later his only brother, Brendon, volunteered
for active service in the region. When the Canadian Forces called their
parents for direction, they were faced with a decision few of us can
fathom. A play about love of family, the search for bravery, and the always
complicated paths to manhood, motherhood, and peace.
