Parade planning in experienced hands with Bauers Parade presidents After stepping in to cover the parade for the 150th Grey Township anniversary reunion, the Bauers were the natural choice to continue that tradition. (Denny Scott photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen Mery and Donna Bauer are repeating their involvement with the Grey Township 160th anniversary reunion as chairs of the parade. Ten years ago Mery fell into the position of parade chair as the existing chair had to leave halfway through the process of organizing it. "Three weeks before the show I had to step in," he said. Donna said that Mery was busy making a lot of phone calls as many people were concerned that, with the change, that the parade wasn't going to happen. "Originally, we were just going to be putting floats in, but then Mery had to do this," Donna said. "Things went pretty well though." The couple says there were only 65 floats pre -registered for the 150th in 2006, however, due to some people showing up the day of the event, there were over 100 in total which made for a very impressive parade. "The parade turned out to be pretty great," Mery said. "It was at least an hour and a half long and bigger than anyone expected" Mery said that everything went very smoothly and everyone was lined up near (what was then) Grey Central Public School. "Hopefully we'll have it go as smoothly this year," Mery said. This year, the couple is hoping for a similar last-minute burst to help grow the parade. "There has been lots of interest," Mery said, saying he and Donna are planning on starting to call people soon to firm up numbers. "We started in January," Donna said. "We're hoping to have most of Historical exhibit at anniversary Continued from page 14 McLellan worked very hard to bring that event together and it was very rewarding when it turned into one of the most memorable weekends in Grey history. This year, Armstrong will be a part of the festivities for the majority of the weekend and her historical exhibit will be on display at the Ethel Hall for people to peruse and enjoy. the participants signed up beforehand, but we can have people sign up later as well. It's hard to say if the numbers will be the same, but we're working to get as many as we can" For insurance purposes, anyone involved in the parade needs to sign a registration form. The Bauers said they would be available on the day of the parade but encouraged participants to find the forms on the Huron East website and have them prepared as a means of saving time. "We really just need a signature," Mery said. As for how the parade is going to be composed, the audience can expect to see local dignitaries; antique cars, trucks and tractors; horses; representation from the Huron County and the 2017 International Plowing Match and local musicians. "We're hoping to have some century farms represented as well as some commercial participants," Mery said. Children are also invited to participate in the parade, Donna said, through the decorated bicycle competition. For more information on the competition, contact the Bauers at 519-887-6493. This year's parade will start at noon on June 25 and the Bauers, alongside the other organizers of the event, are asking participants to line up at Krauter Line.
