PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

Summer has hit and what a
wonderful weekend we enjoyed.
Hot, hot, hot was the temperature
and for many it was great. Some
don't enjoy the heat, but just think of
the cold winter winds and sit back
and enjoy!
We hope all enjoyed a Happy
Father's Day. The Brussels
firefighters held their annual
breakfast and it was enjoyed by a
really good crowd, in spite of the
heat. It was posted that it takes over
$10,000 to outfit a fireman, so the
monies raised are a great help to the
department. Way to go firefighters
for another good job!
The farmers who subscribe to the
theory that corn should be knee-high
by July for a good crop should be
happy. Many fields have made the
knee and are growing well. A nice
rain would be welcomed to help
everything grow. Hay farmers are
The freshest finds
The Brussels Farmers' Market was hopping earlier this month, no doubt thanks to the warm
weather. The weekly event offers shoppers the chance to buy goods from local producers,

going strong with field after field
coming off. Groundhogs are a hot
topic with an over -abundance of
them in the fields, side of the road or
dead on the road. They can strip an
area of beans quite quickly, usually
along ditch banks and certainly
lessen the crop yield.
Driving around the countryside
last week, I could see many changes
in the last few months in the Walton
area. The old house on the John
Huether farm is now been taken
down and the barn on the Hoonaard
farm is getting a facelift with new
boards. The shed on the Hoegy farm
is pretty much completed and is
awaiting the solar panel
installations. There's a new pool on
the Joe Ryan farm and a chicken
barn is almost completed on the
Dalton farm property. Canada
Company Road to the west is being
built up and improved, as well as the
old trees and bushes being cleaned
up. Hullett McKillop Road has a
new shed being built on the Paul
McCallum farm and an addition has
been added to the Bruce Godkin
shed. Wlima Farms have added an
addition to the chicken barn, work
looks like it will start on the house
foundation and a decorative small
building is up behind the house
foundation.
The former Ward property has the
Cronin house completed and the
landscaping now done. A new pig
barn going up on the Braecker farm
and dryer system and some house
improvements and new porch on the
Horan farm. Yes, there sure are
some changes across the
countryside.
The school year is almost over and
the kids are enjoying many field trips
and parties and swimming and fun
times before the summer break, at
least elementary school kids are. Of
course, high school students are
busy studying for exams and then
are anxious to get out and get a job

in many cases. Summer break will
be only seven days from now, so
watch out for lots of excited children
out and about on bikes, skateboards
or roller skates.
Returning from a week away in
Las Vegas are Sharon Stephenson
and Pauline Gulutzen. They had a
great time and report that what
happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but
imparted some of the fun they had.
They did a lot of walking but went in
to cool off at a casino or two. They
went to a few different shows
including seeing the Million Dollar
Quartet, the Country Superstar Show
and the Images of the King (Elvis)
show. They went on a tour of the city
and boarded city buses to check out
the city as well. They stayed at the
Hilton and said it was the best of the
best. A carriage ride was enjoyed
and seeing the water fountain show
at the Bellagio Hotel was gorgeous.
Meals were very pricey with a
hamburger costing $14.95. Yikes! It
was a fantastic trip for the ladies.
Welcome back.
Aerodome, Raceway busy with special events
It was a fly -in weekend at the
Armstrong Aerodome this past
weekend. Looking into the skies
anytime over the weekend, you
would see an airplane coming or
going from the Armstrong runway. It
is arranged by the group who have
built the Pietopol airplanes and they
gather yearly. The Armstrongs have
hosted the weekend many times
before, but two other couples take
turns as well. They get together to
enjoy food, fun, airplane talk, music
and whatever comes along. Many
enjoyed a short bus tour around
Brussels by Bruce Armstrong, who
also dropped them off to enjoy the
firefighters' breakfast. It was a
beautiful weekend for flying and
fun!
It was also a very popular
weekend for family reunions. The
Craig family reunion was held at the
farm of Graeme and Helen Craig.
Folks arrived in the afternoon to
enjoy visiting, swimming and
Passing the torch
On June 14, the Huron Perth Presbytery held its final
2015/16 meeting. Blyth -based Rev. Gary Clark, who had
been the presiding leader of the organization, handed over

Church. (Photo submitted)
games. They enjoyed a potluck meal
around 4:30 p.m. and then the 50 or
so people wound up their day of
reminiscing.
Down at the Walton Hall, the
McNabb family reunion was held
hosted by Rick and Margaret
Mclnroy. There were about 30
people who came from London,
Sarnia, Toronto and the local area.
They enjoyed a potluck lunch at
noon and an afternoon of visiting. It
was a lovely day for all.
A number of Brussels ladies went
on a day's bus trip to Petrolia and the
theatre. The day was arranged by
Jean Davidson and she had 13 ladies
join her on the trip. They enjoyed
the show A Mighty Fortress in Our
Basement and it was hilarious. The
ladies claim they couldn't stop
laughing. They also stopped at the
Marcanda Tea Room and Boutique
for lunch. The ladies included Jean,
Leona Armstrong, Marie
McCutcheon, Betty McCutcheon,
Janet Haertel, Rene Richmond, Joan
Bernard, Sandra Cable, Nora
Stephenson, Bev Palmer, Joan
Jacobs, Joan Smith and Valerie
Gratto. They had a great day!
A Brussels resident joined by her
four "golden" friends enjoyed a
50th high school reunion at the end
of May. Valerie Gratto and her four
ladies, set out from Kingston and
headed to Waskaganish, Quebec, a
Cree community, where a sixth
friend is working as a teacher. The
ladies all went to high school
together in the Montreal area and
hadn't seen each other in 50 years. It
was a 1,700 -kilometre trip, much of
it through the wilderness. You can
see where the forest fires have gone
through, but new growth is sprouting
well. They arrived on the Friday,
May 27, to observe a Cree
celebration for the children. They
watched slingshot and bow and
arrow contests. Their supper
consisted of goose, beaver and bear.
Val stuck to the goose and reports it
was very interesting to watch how
they were cooked. They are cooked
over open fires, suspended from
ropes, and the grease dripped into
pans, for later use in what they called
the roundhouse. Each Cree town
along the Rupert River has an airport
for emergencies. They travelled
another 400 kilometres to the James
Bay Dam, a Hydro Electric plant in
the town of Radisson. They had
arranged for a tour of the
underground workings of the plant
and found it very interesting. They
had a marvellous time away and
can't wait for their next adventure
together. Welcome back Val!
There was a good attendance at the
Walton Raceway on the weekend.
They had a remote control car event
with great participation of
competitors. They had a few from
the States attend and there was a
steady stream of spectators on hand
to watch. It is amazing the speed and
control of the "drivers" of these cars
around the track!
