Senior baseball team
ready for nationals
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The Londesborough Senior
baseball team has set itself up for
both provincial and national titles
this year.
The team, which plays in the
national 55+ league, took second
place in Ontario two years ago,
which earned them the opportunity
to compete in the national
tournament later this year. Earlier
this month the team beat Stratford
and St. Marys 15-5 and 10-9
respectively at the District 29
Huron -Perth Tournament, to earn a
berth at this year's provincial
tournament as well, which means
the team will have an extremely
busy August.
"We are now going to the All -
Canadian championships in
Brampton which run four days and
start Aug. 16," team organizer Ken
Scott said. "Earlier in August,
we will be going to Midland for
the All -Ontario tournament which
is a three-day tournament"
Scott said that the time of the year
is making it tricky to make sure the
team has enough players to compete
in both, but was sure the team would
be able to play in the nationals and
optimistic that the team would be
able to compete at both
tournaments.
The team consists of players from
throughout Huron County who are
55 years or older and some have
played in the league for 15 or more
years. Locally members of the team
include Doug Scrimgeour, Ann
DeWeerd, Glen Webster and Rob
Shaddick.
Scott said he was excited at the
chance to play in both tournaments,
but also said he hopes that the
tournaments, which are bi-annual
events, are changed so they don't
fall on the same year.
"It would be nice because, that
way, you don't have two years
between titles," he said. "You don't
have to wait a full year to play for
another title."
HC Fastball league starts off season with high scores
The Huron County Fastball
League's year is now in full swing
and started with some high -scoring
games throughout the league.
On June 12, the Wingham Hitmen
used their homefield advantage to its
fullest, defeating the Goderich
Grizzlies 7-1.
June 10 marked two games in the
Carrying the torch
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario made its way through Huron
County on Tuesday. Participants spread the good word by walking in towns and villages
throughout the county, including Blyth, shown above, before ending in Goderich. (Denny Scott
