Brussels Lions Club Elimination Draw a success
When the dust settled...
After all the tickets were drawn at the Brussels Lions Club's
annual Elimination Draw on Saturday night at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre, only one remained
and it belonged to local livestock farmer Matt McCall, left,
who was presented his cheque for $5,000, the draw's top
prize, by Lions President John Gillis. (Vicky Bremner photo)
nice. On Monday, the same garden
had sprouted a lot more green, but it
was everywhere, so the weeds really
enjoyed the rain. A lot of first cut
hay came off the field last week, so
spreading manure will be a top job
this week for those farmers.
Congratulations to Rob and Cathy
Burkholder on becoming grandpar-
ents once again. Proud parents are

Well, we finally had some rain and
everything looks a bit better. Passing
a garden on Friday, we saw that it

10 -year-old saves barn from fire
The keen eye and quick thinking
of 10 -year-old Briea Savage saved
her grandparents' barn last week.
Briea who had arrived for a family
dinner, noticed smoke coming from
the 100 -year-old bank barnnorth of
Bluevale on June 1.
Briea notified her grandparents
Cindy and Bill DeVos and then ran
the very long driveway to flag down
responding fire trucks.
"Briea did everything right,"
explained Ken DeVries Public
Education Officer for North Huron.
Briea and her family were able to
get emergency response vehicles
moving quickly through 911 and the
family was there to direct us not only
at the driveway, but directly to the
fire location."
The Fire Department of North
Huron (FDNH) spends a great deal
of time visiting schools and explain-
ing how important it is to have fire
safety plans for your home.
"This young lady has heard our
fire safety messages and in turn did
everything right," DeVries said.
Quick work by firefighters from
North Huron's Wingham and Blyth
stations as well as firefighters and
tankers from Howick and South
Bruce Fire Departments saved the
family's 100 -year-old barn.
"Our mutual and automatic
aid
fire agreements allowed us to put a
lot of resources into this incident,
with support from the Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP), Wingham
Police and Huron County EMS we
were able to extinguish the fire and
eliminate any risk of extension
clearing the scene in three hours,"
Deputy -Chief Chad Kregar said.
Electrical grinding equipment had
ignited straw in the basement of the
barn and heavy smoke was showing
when fire crews arrived just before 5
p.m.
"Even though this is an active
farm, there were no livestock on site
during the fire," explained Fire
Prevention Officer James Marshall.
"This is a great example of every-
thing working out. If you have a
•
farm and want to develop your own
farm fire safety plan call your local
fire department. We would much
rather be proactive than reactive
when it comes to farm fires"
becoming a grandmother for the first
time. Daughter Kendall and husband
Andrew have welcomed a beautiful
baby boy to their lives. Brody Gerald
Behrens arrived in May and is the
apple of grandma's eye.
The Lions Club held another very
successful and sold -out event on
Saturday evening. Their elimination
draw made 25 people happy to win
various amounts of cash. Walton did
very well and had six winners,
including Emerson Mitchell, Greg
Bowers, Gord and Irma Pryce, Chris
and Judy Lee, Pearl McCallum and
Donna McClure. Great music was
provided by the Ballagh Bunch, and
Ava McCutcheon was amazing in
her dance routine. Special singers
included the daughters of Dan
McNeil and they were great.
Our sympathies to Marie and
Clarence McCutcheon on the pass-
ing of their brother-in-law Redmond
MacDonald of Teeswater. Jean
Bridge is still in hospital and we
hope she soon can be home.
A familiar face to many has been
around the area for the last couple of
weeks. Neil Turnbull is home from
the west for his yearly visit with
family and to look after his other
interests in the area. He attended the
elimination draw with brother Keith,
where he had a chance to see many
folks he knew.
You may have noticed a new busi-
ness on North Line. Elligsen Electric
has relocated from Hullett McKillop
Rd. to the corner of North Line and
Summerhill Rd. They have plenty of
room for all the trucks and equip-
ment and needs for an electrical
business. Welcome to North Line.
Our fast healing wishes go to
Agnes TenPas who has suffered a
broken/cracked wrist from a fall. A
good thing she is capable with both
her right and left hands!
Walton was booming again on the
weekend, with motocross this time. Humphries, Shawna McCall and
Saturday was an open practice at the Nicole Bernard.
track and had a great turnout for the
day. Sunday had the track being used
by the Thames Valley Riders Club
and they had a massive turnout of
campers and riders — over 400. It
was a great day and the bit of rain
didn't dampen any spirits.
Janine Knight has been in the area
for a visit and the Knight family
gathered to have a family visit on
Sunday evening at the home of Brad
and Christine Knight. Janine will
return to Newfoundland this week.

A great day in Brussels
The Lions Club's biggest annual fundraiser, the Elimination
Draw, was another success, beginning with dinner and
ending with one lucky person winning $5,000. Here, Lion
Jim Lee, left, served dinner to Carman and Sandra
Machan, while former Brussels Fire Chief Murray McArter
patiently awaits his turn. (Vicky Bremner photo)
