The Wawanosh Nature Centre held a special adventure day on Saturday that welcomed area
families to take part in geocaching, a scavenger hunt and really just to take in the beauty of
the area on a warm, sunny day. Here, Nella Querengesser, with the help of Jenn Elliott, spent
some time in the water trying to catch some of its native wildlife. (Vicky Bremner photo)

The Blyth United Church Women recently held their annual drive-thru lunch and dinner
fundraiser to much acclaim. They served approximately 150 meals as part of the fundraiser,
which took the place of the annual Women's Day Out, which ended a few years ago. Here,

Letter to the Editor
`Pow -wow' title concerns Vodden
THE EDITOR,
I wish to add my name to the
many people who are concerned
about the East Wawanosh 150th
celebration being referred to as a
"Pow -Wow".
Pow -Wows are sacred events that
form an important cultural place in
the life of First Nation communities.
To refer to the East Wawanosh event
as a Pow -Wow is an affront to all of
our First Nation peoples in this area
and throughout Canada. This is
happening in the aftermath of the
Truth and Reconciliation process
which has made most thinking
Canadians aware of our need to
adopt a new awareness and
sensitivity to our relationship with
all of our indigenous communities.
It seems that some people slept
through that news cycle.
It is my understanding that many
people have spoken to members of
the planning committees about the
inappropriateness of attaching this
name to the 150th event.
Unfortunately, it appears that no
action has been taken to remove the
insult.
It could be that at the beginning of
the planning people used the term
thinking it referred to any kind of
celebration with a nod to Chief
Wawanosh.
Now that they have been told that
the term refers to a very specific
kind of event, sanctioned by First
Nation people, a sacred event in
which absolutely no alcoholic
beverages are present, one
would expect the name to be
dropped.
I urge the 150th committee to
remove the term Pow -Wow
immediately with an appropriate
apology to our First Nation peoples.

5R's theft leads
to probation term
Brandon Stone of Brussels was
ordered to pay a handful of fines and
was given an 18 -month probation
term in Wingham court last
month in connection with a pair of
thefts.
Crown Attorney Richard
Weatherston said that suspicion
around theft from the 5R's thrift
store in Brussels began when items
began disappearing from the store's
donation centre.
As a result, the store manager had
a surveillance system installed,
which, on March 24, 2015 captured
Stone taking items from the
donation area, Weatherston said.
The items included a curtain rod,
glasses and candlesticks, he said.
After the store's manager had a
chance to review the video, she
called the police, who came to
Brussels looking for Stone. He hid
the items behind the village's post
office, but the police eventually
caught up with him.
Stone was further charged when
on Nov. 29, he stole a laptop
computer from The Source in
Goderich.
Weatherston said that security
cameras caught Stone taking the
display model computer off of the
shelf of the store and leaving
without paying for it. The computer,
he said, was valued at $369.99.
Upon reviewing the footage, an
employee recognized a female party
who was with Stone as a customer
who had recently bought an iPhone
at the store. A call was then placed to
that person, who helped lead police
to Stone and the stolen laptop.
Weatherston said that original
phone calls between Stone and
representatives of the store came to
an agreement that if Stone were to
return the stolen computer, charges
would not be filed, or he could
simply pay for it.
However, those talks broke off and
then the computer turned up in the
office of a Goderich lawyer who
could not say how it got there, citing
solicitor/client privilege. The
computer, however, was identified as
the one taken from the store.
In between those two incidents,
Stone was further charged with
breaching the conditions of his
probation, when he was found to
have changed addresses without
informing the police — a condition of
his probation.
Stone's lawyer Scott Cowan said
there were a number of important
factors in the case that showed
Stone's actions were not that of a
calculating criminal, but someone
who had reached a desperate
situation in his life.
He said the monetary value of the
donated materials was very low and

he also said the computer theft was
"unsophisticated" and a clear
attempt at making some quick
money.
He also said there was a
reasonable explanation for the
breach of probation charge as well,
as Stone's roommate was forced to
move, leaving Stone without a place
to live.
He has since established solid
residence in Brussels and is
attempting to turn his life around,
Cowan said, securing a job and
staying out of trouble.
While Weatherston was pushing
for a period of incarceration, Cowan
said he felt that would stall Stone's
progress and didn't feel it was in the
public's best interests. Judge R.G.E.
Hunter agreed and opted for fines
and probation, as opposed to jail.
Stone was given a $250 fine on the
breach of probation charge and an
18 -month term of probation for the
theft of the laptop. He was also
ordered to pay $100 to the 5R's store
in Brussels.
