Outdoor church etient, ball game a `great success'
Time outdoors
Londesborough United Church took its show outdoors on Sunday, hosting an outdoor church
service at the hamlet's baseball diamond, followed by a special barbecue and community
softball game. The day was a success, although it was cut slightly short due to thunderstorms
rolling in during the game. Serving up lunch to hungry Londesborough residents were, left, Mel
Knox and, right, Cheryl Trewartha. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan is looking ahead to
perhaps some more savings through
shared servicing at the Huron County
level.
MacLellan brought forward a
notice of motion, meaning that a
formal motion will be on the table at
a future meeting, that the county
further investigate savings associated
with greater service sharing,
beginning with the community
emergency management co-ordinator
(CEMC) program.
MacLellan presented the notice of
motion, which was seconded by
Goderich Mayor Kevin Morrison, at
Huron County Council's June 1
meeting.
There was no further discussion on
the matter, but the motion will be
debated at a future meeting of Huron
County Council.

there is nothing to fear for residents
of Huron County.
In his update on the Health Unit to
council at the June 1 meeting of
Huron County Council, Hessel said
that there are usually two audits per
year, chosen at random, so residents
shouldn't be alarmed.
He said the audit should be
completed in September and that he
views it as a positive exercise.
If Huron County isn't doing
something right, the audit will point
it out and if the county is doing
everything properly, he said, then
those involved will know.

Fires keep
The Fire Department of North
Huron (FDNH) had a busy Saturday
night with two unattended open-air
burns, shedding light on the danger
these fires present.
On June 4, the FDNH responded to
an unattended open air burn on
London Road in Morris-Turnberry at
9:31 p.m. according to FDNH Chief
David Sparling.
In Sparling's report, the fire, which
consisted of a large pile of brush,
was called in by a passing motorist.
The fire was brought under control
by the FDNH.
As crews were returning from the
call, another unattended open air
burn on Blyth Road in Central Huron
was called in by the Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP).
Sparling's report states that a
property owner had been burning
garbage during the day and left it
unattended. The OPP, passing the
property, noticed a brush fire had
started next to a shed.
"The Ontario Fire Code requires
all open air burns be attended at
all times," Sparling said. "Not only
is it a poor use of taxpayer money
to be ready to help its businesses and

Huron County councillors received
two delegations at their June 1
meeting.
The first involved a number of

years of service to Huron County.
The second delegation was from

Queen of the Furrow Kate Higgins,
who told councillors what she had
done over the course of the year in
her role as queen.
Higgins also invited councillors to
take part in this year's Huron County
Ploughing Match, which is set to be
held at Monoway Farms in Monis-
Turnberry, the home municipality of
Warden Paul Gowing and a location
just down the road from Higgins'
home, she said.

remember those soldiers who were
in the early waves on Juno Beach in
Normandy in 1944. One of my
uncles was killed that day and my
sister and I recently learned of this
service. It was a tasteful
commemoration.
Consequently, I missed the
Sunday worship service for
Londesborough United that day.
However Erica Baxter, a member of
the church outreach committee sent
along the following report.
Londesborough United Church's
first annual "Hot Dawgs at the
Diamond" was a great success. After
much needed rain fell overnight,
things cleared up for the outdoor
service, barbecue and baseball
game.
Around 50 people attended the
casual outdoor service which was
led by Rev. Terry Fletcher. Barb
Bosman led everyone in the singing
of much -loved camp songs with
Terry Fletcher and Ken Scott
accompanying on guitars. The sun
even came out for the singing of
"This Little Light of Mine". The
words had been changed to "shine
all over Londesborough, I'm going
to let it shine!"
Following the service, the grills
were fired up and 65 people enjoyed
the barbecue. After the last of the ice
cream and watermelon were eaten,
an exciting ball game began.
Unfortunately the game was called
on account of the thunderstorm that
rolled in. But all in all it was a great
initial outdoor gathering. Thanks to
all who came out to make it a
success.
