PAGE 32. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2016. School gala raises over ,50,000 for improvements As for whether the gala will become a major driver for the group going forward, Farrell -Becker said she hopes so. "We would love to see the gala become an annual event for the community," she said. "Our vision is that the funds raised each year could be used to support projects happening in the community." She said the success this year was due to the hard work of the volunteers and the businesses and communities in the area. 'We could not have done it without the support of the surrounding communities," she said. "The generosity and support of the local businesses and people made the evening what it was. It is amazing what a small community can do when they come together for a common goal" For more information on BB2F's goals and events, visit www.bb2f.com Sharing her story Blyth -area resident and F.E. Madill Secondary School teacher Julie Sawchuk was one of three guest speakers at the Building Bridges to our Future Making Connections gala fundraising dinner at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre on Saturday. The event brought in money for the group that hopes to improve the playgrounds and sports fields at Madill and Maitland River Elementary School. Sawchuk shared her tale of recovery after being paralyzed from the chest down in a vehicle -bicycle collision last year. (Dennyscottphoto) By Denny Scott The Citizen The Evening of Connections fundraiser held by the Building Bridges to our Future (BB2F) group is being heralded as a major success by its organizers. The gala, which was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre in Wingham on Saturday night, featured a live and silent auction and special guest speakers. Organizer Teresa Farrell -Becker said BB2F had hoped to raise $50,000 for the event and early estimates have the night bringing in more than $57,000. "We felt the night was a success," she said in an e-mail to The Citizen. All the funds raised by the event will go to the refurbishment of the lower sports field and track at F.E. Madill Secondary School, Farrell - Becker said. The funds will also help install an accessibility path to make sure that both the track and field are accessible to the community, an important message for the event as all the guest speakers had dealt with life -changing injuries. Blyth resident and Madill teacher Julie Sawchuk, who was paralyzed from the chest down in a cycle -vehicle collision last year was one of the speakers. Paralympic track and field coach David Greig #1 And We Still Try Harder Recent circulation figures show The Citizen has the highest circulation in the northern part of Huron County, #3 in the entire county. The Citizen Proudly Community -Owned Since 1985 b and Paralympic Gold Medal Champion David Willsie was the other. While the evening was a success, Farrell -Becker said there is still ground to cover for BB2F's fundraising efforts. "We are still working to raise the funds to complete phase one of the track and sports field project but we are much closer to our goal after the success of the gala," she said. "We would like to see work start on the project in the next year but we must raise the full amount before work can begin. The current estimate for phase one is just under $156,000" SOLD!
