PAGE 14. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2016. From the Minister's Study Death: Not at our disposal By Pastor Ernest Dow, Living Water Christian Fellowship (EMC), Blyth In August, 2010, we received a notice while on vacation in the U.S. that my 84 -year-old mother was in terminal condition in a hospital in London. We hurried to her room, where my father kept watch at her bedside. She was succumbing after a number of years' struggle to lupus and achalasia (difficulty swallowing). When it became apparent there was little chance of her reviving, the doctor advised my father the only thing remaining was to withdraw the ventilation tube and allow her to die naturally. After considering this, knowing that my mother had been firm in her Christian hope, and when we'd had time to prepare ourselves, after some further moments my father gave the instructions to proceed. The doctor's prediction was accurate; she did not draw many breaths after the tube was withdrawn. It was a difficult decision, but it was the right decision. To continue the burden of treatment would have been pointless. It does raise a notable point: there is a big difference between euthanasia and allowing a person to die naturally upon removal of treatment. Withdrawing artificial ventilation or nutrition that are keeping a patient alive but are no longer wanted or indicated are not forms of euthanasia or physician - assisted death. Euthanasia, by contrast, is knowingly and intentionally performing an act, with or without consent, that is explicitly intended to end another person's life. There is a big difference. Basically we were just allowing mom to die naturally, without additional intervention that was `futile' medically speaking — not at all likely to be successful. Three years later, my 61 -year-old brother succumbed to lymphocytic leukemia after a struggle of some years — although the final six months were the most difficult. I was able to be at Dennis' bedside as well when Brussels Mennonite Fellowship 250 Princess St., Brussels 519-887-6388 www.bmfchurch.com Pastor Ken Gazley Worship Service 10:00 am Sunday School 11:15 am Guests Welcome Jesus Is Lord! He was surrounded by those who loved him: his wife, children, and his wife's sister who also happened to be a trained RN. It was teary and it was difficult. His breathing had become laboured and every movement a struggle. He was in such poor shape that it was one of those situations where "no one would have wished him back" into such conditions. Yet, it was a 'good death'. One couldn't ask for better surroundings or care. Dennis too was firm in his Christian faith so there was no fear of the hereafter, just the hardship of the transition. He had `fought the good fight' and was ready to meet his Master. My brother's final few months had certainly been no picnic, but he never considered hastening his Continued on page 16 You're n1?ited cJ( oiii LC.s :S,il 7 ors 111 ) SUNDAYS 1 Morning Service 10:00 am Evening Service 7:30 pm XV AI BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH Minister: Pastor Gary van Leeuwen Hwy. 4, Blyth www.blythcrc.ca 519-523-4743 efuedeeed eamatoritv edee eitaftee You're 'inviteclT to come worsh p with us Sunday, April 17 Brussels Business & Cultural Centre at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday School for children 4 to 12 years of age at 9:30 a.m. Childcare provided for infants and preschoolers during the sermon.
