Belief at the heart of Easter Continued from page 13 resurrection. In other words, because Jesus rose from the dead, we also can rise, and when we rise all the weaknesses and frailties that are currently ours are eliminated. We become the people God created us to be. Third, Jesus' resurrection, resulting in the resurrection of all who believe in Him, gives us hope for the future. Because resurrections are the making new of that which is broken, we know that Jesus' resurrection also foreshadows the renewal of the world and all that is in it. In other words, because resurrections happen, when we are raised from the dead, we will be raised to inhabit a place that has been cleansed of all its troubles. Climate change, sickness, dying, suffering, loneliness — all of these and more will be eliminated. We will be raised to a good life, a life where all is well. But none of this is possible if Jesus was not raised from the dead. If Jesus was not raised, then we cannot be raised. And if we cannot be raised, then the whole system of the Christian faith is futile. What point would there be in following Jesus if Jesus were still dead? On the other hand, because Jesus did rise from the dead, we also can rise. And we will rise to life in its fullest. Now I do need to note that this is not just a matter of a personal faith. What I believe about Jesus doesn't really change the reality. Even if I believe that Jesus did rise from the dead, and if He didn't, that doesn't make Him alive today. Conversely, just because someone says that they don't believe Jesus rose from the dead doesn't mean that Jesus didn't. What scripture asks us to do is think about its teachings. If we choose not to believe, no one is going to force us to believe otherwise. That would be impossible. On the other hand, if we do believe, then we have great hope. I believe that Jesus is alive today. I can't force anyone else to believe it. But think about the implications. If (because) He is alive, we have so much to look forward to. We have a future, and we have hope. May God give you the grace to believe that which has happened.
