WI donates to Building Fridges school fundraiser PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE A big help Patricia Smith, one of the organizers of the Maitland River Christmas Market bake and craft sale at Maitland River Elementary School was happy to report that the Belgrave WI group had decided to donate $1,000 from their participation in the event back to the Building Bridges to Our Future Campaign which is raising money for better facilities between Maitland River and F.E. Madill schools. Smith, who moved to Belgrave more than a decade ago, said she is constantly amazed by how strong and giving the community is. President Verna Norgate welcomed members and guests and the opening ode was sung. The Mary Stewart Collect was repeated. St. Patrick's Day decorations adorned the table in honour of the upcoming celebration. The two special guests were introduced: Danielle Van Wyk, Family Support Counsellor and a student, Michelle. The topic was Alzheimer's and other dementia. Danielle gave a thorough presentation including symptoms, various types of dementia, care for the caregiver, the warning signs to be aware of and also what you can do to maintain or improve brain function. A token of appreciation was given to the Huron County Alzheimer's Association from the branch. Next on the program, Patricia Smith and daughters Chloe and Amelia Foreman were introduced. They represented Maitland Elementary School "Building Bridges" project for playground equipment. Belgrave branch presented a $1,000 cheque for this cause. Business included the usual reports — secretarial, financial and correspondence. Eight members reported their volunteer hours and answered the roll call with "what action can we take for a healthier brain?" Used postage stamps can now be saved and given to S.O.S. (ACWW). Mabel Jacklin volunteered to act as a branch director along with Mary Hunter. All members are urged to attend the next meeting. It is the annual meeting of the branch on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. At that time District President Debbie Bauer plans to attend and an important vote will be held concerning the future of the Huron West District. After the WI grace, a brown bag lunch was enjoyed along with fellowship. FROM BELGRAVE Centre uses generator to help community members Last Monday evening was the first time the Belgrave Community Centre was able to make use of the new generator that was purchased for just that cause. The hydro went out about 5:30 p.m. and because it was not to come on until 8:45 p.m., the arena was opened for anyone wishing to come in, instead of sitting in the dark. The coffee was on and there were a few visitors, so this is a reminder to any community families that the arena will be open when the hydro goes off again. We have heat, washrooms, showers and can make you comfortable during the outage. Harold and Nancy Jardin greeted worshippers and handed out the bulletins on Palm Sunday, March 20 at Knox United Church. Student minister Brian Hymers welcomed everyone and went over the announcements. The congregation and community wish Ivan Dow and Donald Dow speedy recoveries. Both are recovering from recent falls. Harold Jardin will be retiring on March 31 and the congregation and the community wish him all the best. Brian lit the Christ Candle. The children's hymn, "He Came Riding on a Donkey" was accompanied by Mackenzie Wightman at the piano, Ann Clark, the organ and Lila Procter with her guitar. The children gathered in the front pew for story time. Brian read a story entitled "Celebrating Passover." Passover is a feast of the Jews to commemorate the time when God smiting the first-born of the Egyptians, passed over the houses of Israelites. After the Lord's Prayer the children adjourned to Sunday school. Those in attendance listened to the Word of God as Ron Taylor read from Luke 19: 28-40, Psalm 118 read responsively with the congregation and Luke 22: 7-13. Brian reflected on parades and that they can announce the beginning of something. Two of Jesus' friends went to look for a donkey. It was going to be a special donkey. Jesus was going to ride on it. The friends took the donkey to Jesus and put their coats on its back and Jesus got on. When the people saw Jesus coming they began to shout with joy. "Hosanna, Hosanna! Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some people cut branches off the palm trees and laid them on the road. Other people spread their coats on the road. They all praised God in loud voices for the wonderful things Jesus had done. Jesus rode to the big city of Jerusalem and the crowd followed him. The leaders of the people were angry because all the people were following Jesus and not following them anymore. They said we must get rid of Jesus. We can celebrate our Saviour through prayer. Jesus is free to all who want to accept him and is always available. We don't need a parade to celebrate. The congregation sang the hymn of response which was "Ride On! Ride On in Majesty." On March 25 Good Friday Service will be held in Belgrave at 11 a.m. There is a Easter Sunrise Service at Donnybrook Cemetery on March 27 at 8 a.m. with communion, followed by breakfast at Trinity.
